Guest Guest_efgh
Hi Nancy Can you please tell me if the calcium citrate that you give your son is from the company cardiovascular research? Also can you please tell me the brand of the multivit that you give your son and the dosage? Which company is the multivit from? Haven't seen you posting for a while... Thanks. Guest Nancy
efgh, No, I bought calcium citrate made by Nutricology I found at the Vitaminshoppe. I think I got it because each capsule is 150 mg, so he doesn't have to take so many. I think I did see calcium by Cardiovascular Research, though. I'm sure that's fine too. I can't remember why I didn't get it. I don't give my older guy with tics a multivitamin - he gets it all separately. Well, actually, one of his capsules is called Vitamins Only by Solgar, which includes Vitamins A, C, D, E, and all the B vitamins. I'm actually still searching for a good multivitamin for my younger guy too. I've been giving him a chewable GNC Kids multivitamin with calcium and minerals (comes in animal shapes). I liked that it doesn't have nutrasweet or other bad stuff, but it has sorbitol, which is a type of sweetener I just read some not so great stuff about, so I'm looking for something else. My problem is, I want something with more calcium, and most kids' multivitamins have very little. My younger guy doesn't swallow pills like my older guy, so he has to get it in something chewable along with the OJ and rice milk he drinks. I've been really busy working lately (lots of late nights!) so I haven't posted much. And, wouldn't you know it, my son started ticcing again a few weeks ago after going so long with it mostly gone. I'm been trying to figure out what set it off, but I'm just not sure. I'm considering the whole light flicker thing as part of it, but I just don't understand why he'd be ok for so long and suddenly have it affect him so strongly. I don't know. Tics are so complicated, sometimes I just don't think you can figure out every trigger. I went through the whole panicky feeling again, and I'm back to acceptance for now. It doesn't seem to bother him, so I'm going to ride it out and keep searching. Hope all is well with you. Nancy
Guest Guest_efgh
Nancy, Thanks Nancy for your prompt reply. I guess, Nutricology is the same as Allergy research group ? I got calcium citrate from allergy research group company, same 150 mg as yours and it says "Contraindicated with use of aluminum containing drugs". what exactly does this mean? Does your son have vocal tics now? what are the tics that he has started off with again? for how long was he tic free? You said light flicker stuff is a suspect - Do you mean TV? Does he watch a lot of TV? I came across a good multivit after a long search (without iron and copper) by the company allergy research group or nutricology .. you can check http://www.nutricology.com/proddesc/produc...0200_mvm_no.htm Are you planning on the multivit for your younger son in general OR does your younger one have tics too? Yes, tics seem to be too complicated and unpredictable ... I also feel that more than the external triggers that we are searching for, there is something called internal factors like hormones, age, stress etc which governs the waxing and waning cycles. Goodluck to you!
efgh
Nancy I too give the same calcium citrate from nutricology (allergy research group) and magnesium taurate from cardiovascular research (bought from vitamin shoppe) for my son. Together, they seem to help a real lot. Nancy, are they gelatin capsules - Any idea if these companies make the same products in veggie caps too? Would appreciate your suggestions/inputs on this. I don't see any website for cardiovascular research (Ecological formula) .. Is this a reputed company?? thanks.
Guest Jean
Hi Efgh, You've mentioned that calcium citrate and magnesium taurate together help your son a lot. Would you please let me know in what aspect (i.e., tics or sleeping problem, or others)? Did you purchase them from on-line? Thanks in advance! Guest Guest_efgh
Jean, you can get it online from www.vitaminshoppe.com I guess calcium and magnesium are important for kids with tics and would help their overall well being. Dont know if that together with certain food/TV restrictions is what is really helping or if it is the typical waning cycle. Time will tell. His sleep patterns have definitely improved. He used to take hours to go to the "sleep mode" before and now its hardly 20 minutes. Hope this helps.
Guest Jean
Hi Efgh, Thanks for your reply! I was just reading a book titled "Enzymes for Autism and other Neurological Conditions" tonight. There is one chapter particular mentioned magnesium and neurology. Good to hear your sons’ improvement!
Guest Jean
Efgh, Speaking of calcium and magnesium, here is the quote from the book (mentioned in my previous post): "When considering calcium, first see if magnesium deficiency needs to be correcting. You may be getting enough calcium already but the body is not able to use it because it lacks the magnesium needed for calcium absorption. If you are low in magnesium and supplement with even more calcium, the calcium deficiency problem only becomes worse". Would you please let me know what dosages that you give to your son in both magnesium and calcium. Thanks!
Chemar
Bonnie G has frequently posted on BrainTalk about the importance of maintaining the correct ratio of calcium & magnesium....I dont have the time to do it right now as i am working, but a search there nwould probably bring up the info
Guest Nancy
efgh, Sorry, I don't know if they make these products in veggie caps. I've never looked into that issue. Jean and others, I believe Bonnie says the calcium/magnesium ratio should be 2:1. We try to achieve that. Nancy
Guest Guest_efgh
Nancy do you still give probiotics to your son? Are they helpful for his tics? I remember you mentioned HMF (from seroyal) - just wanted to make sure you are continuing the same probiotic for your son or did you give it as a course for a particular duration .. How are things with you. Hope your son is doing well. Thanks efgh
Guest Nancy
efgh, Yes, we all still take probiotics. My son still takes the HMF. I've heard enough about them that I think we'll just always take them to try to keep things balanced. My son's doing well, pretty much no tics. Hope you're doing well too. Guest Guest_efgh
Nancy, Thanks. Which HMF product/what dosage do you use as a probiotic for your son. Can you pass the link to that product please... My son is doing ok but not tic free though. He gets more tics while reading a book (especially eye tics and few mild vocals). when your son's tics were more prominent did you notice MORE tics while reading a book? thanks. Guest Nancy
efgh, My son still takes the Seroyal HMF probiotic - 2 in the morning. I don't have a link. I don't think you can buy it except through a doctor - our naprapath orders it for us. As far as tics while reading, I very rarely noticed him tic while reading. I seem to recall one bout of waxing when I noticed it, which was unusual. I hope things continue to improve for you. Take care. Nancy
Guest Guest_efgh
Thanks Nancy. Do you give the Powder form or capsule form of HMF for your son? Did you notice any significant improvement in his tics after you started the probiotics? since you mentioned that reading was not your son's main trigger for tics , what were his triggers in general as far as you noticed?? thanks.
