ilovedogs
Hi all, this isn't in regards to my ds, it's my dh. He is suffering from depression and he exhibits it in symptoms of anger and withdrawl from family activities, etc. He knows he has an issue but isn't ready for counseling. He's also not ready for an expensive visit to a naturopath. What can I start him on vitamin wise and supplement wise that might help him a bit. I've thought maybe upping his B vitamins and getting him on Fish Oil pills. Any other thoughts? I believe that my ds inherited his tics and other problems from my dh's anxiety and ADHD symptoms as his father also has OCD. So, I guess this is a family thing. There are other things going on as well behind the scenes that we need to work on as a family but I want to give his system a boost so that we can discuss things like adults!!! Thanks Bonnie
Chemar
st John's wort (SJW) can help as can L-phenylalanine (the latter only if he doesnt have TS as phenylalanine can be dopaminergic therefore increase tics) my husband has used SJW successfully for depression this time of year (winter, shorter days) many people get S.A.D (seasonal affective disorder) induced depression and there is a lot of good info on light therapy for this mrsD did an experiment on herself with it with very positive results http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/showthread.php?t=12301

I wonder if he'll try it again. I know he also said that fish oil worked for him, he's just not good about taking stuff and he travels for work so I can't stay on him like I can with ds. He really needs to be more self-motivated, hehe!
Chemar
Bonnie, has he ever tried tryptophan or 5HTP? as they do increase serotonin that can be helpful. my hubby just finds SJW better as the trypt and 5htp make him spaced and a bit edgy samE also has benefits for lifting mood but is a bit pricey IMO Fishoil or flaxseed for increased omega3 can only be good....again something mrsD has a lot of info on http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/showthread.php?t=6092

He's out of town until Wed now, thank goodness. He's been a real drag to be around lately and I'm really hoping I can help his mental outlook! myrose
ilovedogs... Thought this site may be helpful for you. How To Be Free From Depression ...without all the nasty side effects Our chemical rich modern diet with large amounts of animal protein, saturated and trans fats and an excess of caffeine and alcohol radically changes our internal ecosystem. Considering then that ‘we are what we eat’ is it any wonder that the incidences of depression are so widespread in our culture. Interestingly, many of the things that are good for your health will also contribute to a more positive state of mind, for example: daily exercise, meditation, yoga, and eating good whole nutritious foods are all recommended by the world’s leading health and nutrition experts for optimum health. These approaches to whole body health are all things that will help you to feel happier as they transform your internal ecosystem to one of optimum health, balance and harmony. This means that following the principals of healthy living laid out in the Food Matters Film can help not only your body but also your state of mind in a way that is medically documented to have results. An important nutritional detail that is often overlooked is the proliferating deficiency of Vitamin B3 (Niacin) in people who are suffering from depression. When given in sufficiently large doses, this safe and naturally occurring vitamin can have an intensely positive effect on mood, outlook, and overall mental wellbeing without any nasty side effects. The full story of how one doctor uses niacin to treat his patients for depression is detailed in the film. http://www.foodmatters.tv/depression.html
airbucket
i am wondering about excercise? does or would your husband excercise? i have family members who were lifted out of depression upon starting a daily activity regimen. also, if there are issues remembering to take pills, what about buying for him one of those weekly pill boxes, they say mon-fri on them and you can prepare all the pills and put them in for each day over the weekend and he could carry that with him and set an alarm on his cell phone? or keep it somewhere its impossible to forget like car or bathroom even. i have also heard of SJW and 5 htp, i wonder is it depression laced with anything like OCD or anxiety attacks? that might help you narrow down what to try. Good luck to you and he.
