Toms_Mom
Last weekend my husband took my son out to watch older son's tennis match. I packed a lunch for him, but later in the afternoon some of the parents and kids went to a restaurant and my husband wanted to stop by for a few minutes and thought it would be ok for my son to have a sprite while he talked at the bar. Well of course when he mentioned it I was upset and said he is not allowed to have that. He said "I thought we were going to ease up on the diet" and I said " yes, but I don't want him to have high fructose corn syrup!" I didn't really want to get into an argument- I thought whats done is done. Well anyway when they got home I had supper ready, but ds would hardly eat-which is HIGHLY unusual - he is ALWAYS hungry. So he went to sleep in our bed with dh-he wasn't feeling well. Two hours later- I was upstairs on the computer as usual - and I heard dh downstairs just vomiting SO loudly in the toilet - I went running downstairs wondering "what in the world?" and come to find out ds had thrown up all over the bed, the pillows, the floor, the wall and dh had gotten sick trying to clean up after him! Of course I ended up cleaning the whole mess. I didn't have to say a word-he knew. He was like "could that really make him throw up?" And I told him "Well when you think about it - he hasn't had anything but clean organic food for over a year and then you throw all of those chemicals on his empty little stomach, what do you expect? (He hasn't had any sodas in over a year). What do you all think about this reaction? He was fine the next day and back to normal! Mary
Chemar
Hi Mary oh my bet dh wont ever cheat on the diet again huh my son now gets very nauseous if he consumes HFCS or any of the additives so this does not surprise me in a little one on empty stomach and system that has been cleansed from all that junk for so long
lurker
Karma . It reminds me, I am NOT looking forward to Halloween. We relax the diet for Halloween (at least it's not a school night this year), Valentine's Day, and Easter. Even back in the old days when we were a "McFamily" with bad eating habits, I could see the difference in their behavior after the big candy-eating holidays. It will probably be even more evident now.
Caryn
Mary! I feel so bad for your ds and dh, but oh my gosh, can I relate! I could so see that happening over here w/ my dh-- When our son is doing fantastic (as now) he develops the 'well is he really that allergic' mentality. It always takes an infraction to remind him why we are doing this. So glad to have a place like this to come to.... Makes me feel so normal when I hear stories like yours! Thanks for sharing. I'm sure this episode will keep him on the straight and narrow until at least Christmas this time--- Well, hopefully longer, right? Caryn ah, men.... They just can't cope at all without the women in their lives!
ilovedogs
Oh Mary, my dh would do the same thing! Of course, we've been really lax in our diet stuff lately. I have been letting ds have HFCS in Sprite. The only thing I've been diligent about is the food colorings, dyes, and MSG. My ds has a VERY sensitive stomach and I wonder if I should get him off the HFCS and see if there's improvement. I'm sure your dh will now heed your words about the diet stuff, though! CSP
You know it took me a little while to figure this one out, but I think HFCS give me some kind of tingle in my legs. I have never had restless leg, but I came to suspect HFCS in soda that made my legs feel this way right before I would try to sleep. I don't ever get this unless I have a soda. So I don't drink soda with HFCS. My DD is the one who pointed me to this driection after she learned about GMO in Biology last year, and told me soda was loaded with it. That is when I tested HFCS and figured out that was what it was. CP
ilovedogs
Hmmm, GMO? Is that genetically modified? I really need to get ds drinking something else when we go to Subway or the pizza place but I don't want him to have iced tea b/c of the caffeine and I don't want him to have the lemonades b/c they usually have an artificial sweetener like aspartame. The juices all have dyes. What do you all give if you have to stop at a fast food place or if you go out to eat? My ds isn't a water drinker unless he's taking vitamins or exercising. Although, I'm trying to get him to increase his water intake slowly!
Toms_Mom
When we go out I know it's boring, but I usually just buy him a bottled water and he is used to it and doesn't complain. However, if you were willing to take something along I know Blue Sky and Hansens has all natural sodas that are actually quite good! They are sweetened with sugar. I've bought them a few times and ALL of my kids like them. Also, Simply Lemonaide has single serving bottles at our grocery store- those are my favorite! I am dreading Halloween as well. My son has already told me he is getting lots of candy and he is going to eat all of it! I offered that maybe he could eat a few pieces that night- which has always been my rule even with my older kids- and I would buy the rest of the candy from him and he could go shopping for a toy and he said "Oh so you can just eat all of the candy!" and I said "No I will donate it somewhere!-I think our dentist office buys back candy." ilovedogs
My ds decided last year that he didn't want to 'do' Halloween anymore. He thought it was stupid just walking around getting candy. Yes, he said this, and it wasn't prompted by either of his parents. I like meeting the neighbors and walking around, etc. So, we decided that we're going to drive up north that day and see the trees changing color and that we aren't even going to give out candy. Ds never ate much of his candy anyway; dh and I did most of the eating. So, I'm relieved that we're taking a break this year! I like your idea of the Simply Lemonade small serving sizes. I know that Subway has milk and juice boxes available but many restaurants haven't caught on yet.
Chemar
target sells natural italian sodas that my son likes. he also mixes his own at home by adding pure concord grape or cranberry juice to seltzer. makes a great spritzer when at a restaurant he drinks perrier and ads a squeeze of lime or lemon we never do fast food anymore so no problem deciding there. guy123
What a strange reaction. I rarely drink soda... maybe anywhere between once every few months to a couple times a month. In fact, usually the only time I ever drink soda is when I'm a bit queasy and drink a Sprite or ginger ale to help. I suspect that the soda did not cause him to vomit. Toms_Mom
Well you could be right, it could be a coincidence, but... my son was not sick at all before the soda and he is not one to get sick easily. In fact I cannot remember the last time he vomited- it had to be at least 18 months- 2 years ago. I think of course in most children it would not cause this kind of reaction, but given that my ds has been on a strict diet for 1 1/2 years, his system may be more sensitive to HFCS etc. Mary

I've heard that with some foods, abstaining from them for a long period of time can cause intolerance when they are reintroduced. I've heard this is especially true with milk. I remember for a few years I stopped eating red meat (chicken and fish and pork and everything else was fine, tho), and when I finally went back to it, I had a double cheeseburger and ended up falling asleep for 2 hours immediately afterward. I guess my stomach wasn't used to digesting red meat.
