TO ALL

Would like to get some USEFUL TIPS and COPING STRATEGIES from you all as to how you manage going often to restaurants and holiday spots in cars/buses/trains with your children with tics. As we all know, tics mostly are on the higher side when our children are idle especially when they are travelling in car/buses/trains and that too if its a long journey its even worse especially vocal tics. I notice that my son tries SO MUCH and controls his vocal tics during such journeys in the train/buses but if its in the car (where only we are there) he lets it out. Since Reading a book also makes him tic more in general, that does not seem to be a solution.

So, does that mean we should avoid such travels... HOW WERE YOU ALL COPING WITH SUCH SITUATIONS.

Thanks.

Jennifer,

thanks for your useful info. Needless to mention, your posts are so interesting too (esp. the recent post wherein you described your son's ocd tendencies) !!! Also wanted to ask you one thing - you mentioned somewhere that even after your son was free from most of his vocal tics he continued to make that "Mm" sound while watching TV or when he was being read to. Did that completely go away now on its own? How long did that phase take. My son seems to be in that situation now. Did you avoid TV/books in such situations or did you let him watch.

your inputs on this would help me cope with this situation better.

Jennifer, just recd Mercola's newsletter . It says fish oil is ideal (more ideal than flax oil) for ADHD, tics etc.

Any idea if in general fish oil or fish capsules are better (from the purity point of view). ? I got a very good fish oil in health stores (with natural fish oil from Norway - supposed to be superioir). But I read somewhere that it is better to buy capsules than oil from toxicity point of view ... any inputs on this??

How long was the travel during your son's youth mission trip? How did he cope during the travel duration?

In this context, I would be happy to recv your inputs on my first post in this thread.

Thanks

Hi efgh

sorry

I didnt see this thread before.

My son was away for 2 weeks, during which time his tics were AMAZINGLY reduced even tho he was in very high temperatures and "exciting" conditions.

They didnt eat much other than rice and beans, and did a lot of manual lavor in the heat building an orphanage and medical clinic.

The chaperones are all people from our church who know my son very well and they were quite astonished at how his tics were way down on the trip

we had a discussion on this surprise tic waning at BrainTalk

http://neuro-mancer.mgh.harvard.edu/ubb/Fo...TML/005327.html

When we go to restaurants my son just enjoys his food but still stays away from the sodas and those kind of things.

He does tic more in confined spaces, but, as I have mentioned before, we have learned to just let it be, and it seems to wane much faster than if he feels self conscious and tries to supress. We really have learned to live with mild tics and so we dont get stressed out in situations where they show slight increase.

I just remembered something to add to the above.......my son uses his portable CD player with headphones whenever we travel even short distances in the car, and he also did during the flight to Managua.

He says that listening to his music is the best thing for him when he travels anywhere, and we certainly have noticed that he tics less when he does so.

He also sometimes plays his gameboy, but, although that occupies him, there is no positive effect from it on the tics, and sometimes the opposite!

Thanks for your useful inputs (as usual!)

I am happy for your son really . Same thing. Last month , my son went on a five day trip. He was having constant headshaking tics when he started and I was amazed to see him tic free on his return and after three days at home, his tics started off. His diet there included bread, pasta , etc and he ate very less . does it mean, if you eat less, you tic less. Probably the electricity factor as you suspected (no TV, computer etc). I am perplexed, Chemar. Did you finally figure out why your son's TS waned during his trip? I would be really interested to know since I experienced the same thing and have still not been able to find the actual cause for the sudden wane.

Chemar/Jennifer, what do you mean by blowing raspberries (like a whistling loud sound ??)

And one more suggestion from you experienced people. Since I dont give dairy to my son, I cant give him much cheese or butter . Neither do I give chocolates/junk stuff. I want him to eat FATTY STUFF to enable him to put on MORE WEIGHT. Can you suggest some ? I am finding it hard to maintain a balance between tic triggering food stuffs and food stuffs that will allow him to put on weight.

Chemar,

Do you use Bifidus yoghurt for your son? Heard its very good . Same thing, I used to give bifudus probiotic drinks for my son. But all these contain milk and hence am not sure about continuing the same.
