P_Mom
I am wondering how many out there with PANDAS children have a problem with probiotics. I think I am seeing a pretty clear pattern that when I give my PANDAS sons probiotics, I will see some very mild ticcing the next day or two where before I would see none. Then, I do not give the probiotics the next few days and these mild tics dissappear. I have tested this a few times because I want to be sure of this and not cut out the probiotics for no reason, but, like I said, they seem to react to it. Any similiar experiences? Why do you think that may be? Could it be that since the probiotics are a live microorganism, their overactive immune systems could be reacting to it and possibly fighting it off or something, which causes the tics? Or could it be yeast die off happening and I need to stick to the probiotics until things calm down, where at that point things will be better? My kids are on PenVk, so, that is why I feel the need for probiotics, just to be safe, even though the Pen VK is a narrow spectrum antibiotic and may not have an impact on yeast, I was giving it to be on the safe side, but, now I don't know what to do...any thoughts? kelly
Chemar
Hi ya P.Mom no PANDAS here but Crohns, which is also autoimmune. My son hasnt been able to use probiotics or even eat his beloved yoghurt and kefir anymore. it caused him small flares of the crohns symptoms I dont understand fully why but I have learned by now to heed when he says "this is not good for me" even when it may be a good thing !! emma1
Have you thought of trying s. boulardii which is a "good" yeast? It is not truly a probiotic, but does fight regular yeast, and has been suggested as a prevention for c difficile (a bad spore that can populate when antibiotics have gotten rid of all the normal flora). The reaction might also be to something else in the probiotic -- some have whey. Also, some have a "good" strep in them, which I find does *not* suit my PANDAS-like child at all (I believe the yogurt drink by Dannon has strep in it, even though the bottle has a fancy name for the combination of strains). We are on PenVK too -- and it does have a narrow spectrum, so I am also thinking that yeast is not as much of a problem with this antibiotic (at least, that is what I have been told by our doctor).
