Dedee
I posted a few days ago about my son having difficulty with sleeping since I had to take him off of his cal/mag due to surgery he had on his arm that resulted in excessive scar tissue formation. He has had trouble sleeping since that time. In the evening he seems to get very restless and anxious. He describes it as feeling "edgy". It is at this time that he needs constant reassurance that everything is going to be ok with his arm/hand and ask lots of questions about whether I think it will all get back to normal, etc. Otherwise he seems to be handling the whole thing pretty well. He goes to PT/OT every day and they say he is making great progress and believe with work all will be back to normal in a month or so. BUT, the problem remains that he just can't get to sleep at night. I have started back the epsom salt baths which seem to help his mood some, but not much with the sleep. I am absolutely sure this is related to stopping the calcium/mag since it started at the same time. I am thinking about starting some Magnesium Taurate (sp?), I have heard that helps with anxiety and I was hoping sleep as well. Otherwise his only other supplements are fish oil, multivitamin, and amoxicillin. I was hoping to get feedback on others experience with this. I appreciate any input. Greyhound
St. John's wort and inositol are supposed to be good for anxiety. With St. John's wort, though, you need to consult the doctor before taking it if he is on other medication as it can react with some treatments. I tired both, but not for long enough so I can't comment on previous experience. I have a container of each at home, hardly used lol
CSP
Hi Dedee, Do you think maybe some chamomile tea before bed would help. I think Traditional Medicinals have organic teas for children. I'm sure I have seen a nighttime tea, but not to sure what was offered for children. Last fall when my 16 yo was having some anxiety, do to 10th grade is when you enter the high school here. She had a very hard time with the public affection the upper class were displaying in the halls. And at homecomming, the dancing was just about all she could take and wanted me to pull her out and homeschool her again. At night was the time she had the most trouble. She would keep me up until after midnight talking, because she did not want to go to bed. I made her a chamomile tea but used 2 tea bags for her cup. She said it helped. It took about a month for her to get over all that, and she ended up having the best year in public school. We don't drink much tea in our house so if anyone else does and thinks that would not be a good idea let us know. CP

Chemar
Chamomile tea is excellent for relaxation Dedee Magnesium is also a relaxant and so promotes sleep and of course taurine is good for tics so mag taurate compound may be helpful epsom salts baths before bed (magnesium sulfate) really do help to relax my son and he usually drinks a cup of chamomile tea at same time so a double benefit if anxiety is real bad you could ask your doc if GABA is ok. we used it for a short while when my son was in a mega anxious phase and it really helped
ilovedogs
Hey Chemar, what amount of GABA works for you guys? Actually, this applies to everyone: I'm hoping to convince my naturo to let us take GABA along with the Neuroscience products he's on. Chamomile tea is a great idea. I also have a tea that has valerian and chamomile made by natural medicines(or something like that). They make all kinds of teas to help with specific medical issues like stress, colds and flus, tummy trouble, etc. Bonnie
Dedee
Thanks everyone! Chemar, I am also curious about the GABA. It seems that I have seen that mentioned several times but I can't recall exactly how it works and what it works best on etc.. I started the Magnesium Taurinate last night. He woke me up at 11:30 pm to tell me he couldn't sleep. I tried to get him to take some melatonin, but he didn't want to. He just said he was really worried about everything. We talked for a while and then I fell to sleep. He has been sleeping in my room on the floor by the bed since all this started. It's so hard to see him struggle this way. But I think back to all he has been through and this really is just a ripple in the ocean compared to what we have dealt with in the past. I can't get him to drink and sort of soothing tea (although I do frequently), because with his OCD he still has some issues with what he eats and drinks. He absolutely will not try anything new! You know how it is, you choose your battles. However, he is usually pretty good about taking any sort of medicine / pills as long as I explain what it is for. I am hoping that after a few days with the Mag. Taurinate we may see some results. Thanks for the input! Dedee
Chemar
my son had 2x 250 mg a day and that seemed to work fine. With GABA. less is often of more benefit so if you do start it, start out at 250 mg evenings and add the other 250 mg mornings only if nn. injury puts the body under a lot of stress and so the heightened anxiety could be fallout from the overall disruption to his system both from the injury/healing etc as well as the removal of the cal/mag Also, have you considered doing the Natural Calm for magnesium intake just in case he is one of the few that dont tolerate taurine too well? Dedee
I have thought about Natural Calm, but I wasn't sure if it came in a pill or if it all has to be mixed with something. If it isn't a pill, there is no way I will get it down him. That is why I thought I would try this route first. Still hoping we will see some improvement after more time. I'm getting dark circles.... mommyof2
dedee we use the natural calm and what we do is mix it in water and then add V8 fusion with it...they have lots of good flavors. This way he is getting the drink with fruits and veg and the mag. My husband drinks this also and said it is really good... give the fusion alittle kick.. I know my son wiould not drink it just in water. Hope this helps Mary I have thought about Natural Calm, but I wasn't sure if it came in a pill or if it all has to be mixed with something. If it isn't a pill, there is no way I will get it down him.
