myrose
I was just curious....(we are not Pandas that we know of yet) but I have been trying to read about it in case the titers do come back high. The thing I am curious about is that alot of people seem to mention the frequent urine thing alot. Is this a symptom in Pandas? Also do they actually produce urine or is it just the feeling of "thinking" that they have to go. Lastly, what does this have to do with Pandas anyhow. Not sure of the connection I guess... Thanks in advance to everyone!
kim
Myrose, Just my thoughts on this. I have never considered my boys PANDAS because of "no overnite change, or explosive onset." That is not to say that I haven't seen personality/handwritting changes, or increased urination with relationship to strep or illlness. I believe that the increase in frequency can involve more urine production or not (sometimes an increase in thirst seems to accompany and sometimes not). I did a little investigating a while back, and MHO was that the increase frequency was neither a tic or compulsion. It was something chemically "off" once again. Some things that I looked at were the sodium potassium exchange that influences bladder function (i believe my boys have always had somewhat "different" hydration issues...like the lip swiping tic resulting from an exaggerated dry lip feeling that we all may get, but not to that extent) the possiblility that there is an epinephrine/norepinephrine involvement etc. If you search something like "central nervous system urination," you see where there are many things that could be influencing that urge that are biological events like oxidative stress. This was on e article that I had saved to my files. It talks about using CO Q10 to treat nervous bladder. http://www.freepatentsonline.com/4031205.html
michele
My son for the past year had the urgency feeling to urinate as a first sign during a PANDAS episode or exposure to a virus or strep. Dr. Murphy from Florida told us it is a common PANDAS symptom and one of the first signs of exposure. I have to say the Omnicef has taken the feeling away. His compulsiveness is much better while on omnicef and I think the urination is a compulsive behavior. No sooner then he had gone potty he would run back into the bathroom and feel like he had to go again. I took him for bladder/urine tests and they were negative. It took me awhile to put the connection together. It could be yeast overgrowth also. As we cleared up the yeast with Nystatin I also noticed this improved. However it is a symptom of PANDAS. myrose
So...its just a feeling that they get often, but not all trips to the bathroom produce actual urine???? My daughter often says she feels like she has to go to the bathroom but she is not sure. Sometimes she will produce urine when she goes but other times after she goes to the bathroom nothing comes out. For instance lastnight she kept saying it felt like she had to go pee but everytime she went to the bathroom nothing came out. (we have been checked for urine/bladder infection) I was just curious as to if this relates to anything... Thanks again
michele
I think the omnicef cured us of this feeling. I think it became a compulsion. My son only would go a tiny bit. Hardly anything came out. It was only after exposure to strep or during an episode too. Here is an article link highlighting the urination as a main symptom of PANDAS. Plus I like this article. http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/exchange/node...9#comment-65462 So...its just a feeling that they get often, but not all trips to the bathroom produce actual urine????My daughter often says she feels like she has to go to the bathroom but she is not sure. Pudgeo
My son is definitely PANDAS awaiting IVIG..he is urinating frequently during the day..but it's also the OCD where if we're out he wants to go into every bathroom, like at the store....drives me crazy..Sarah
michele
My son did feel the urge to urinate constantly during PANDAS episodes. The Omnicef totally took this "desire" away. In fact it reduced alot of his obsessions. He still gets marked likes but they are not as extreme. He can deal with the disappointment of not getting everything he thinks he needs. Then the Abilify took the mood swings away. He has reduced the temper tantrums. He still gets upset but not like before where it was all day long, high and lows and he couldn't get over things. If we could get the handwriting and gross motor delays caught up he would be doing much better. I am awaiting his last report card where he was on the Abilify. I am praying all the check marks are gone. I have heard from teachers at school how well he is doing. Sun. he participated in choir at church for the first time. Before that he couldn't sit still long enough to pay attention. It was torture for him to participate. I still hear an occassional vocal squeal throughout the day or catch a knuckle cracking. I don't know if this is out of habit or the urge to tic is still there. We had fevers and sore throats in the house last wek.Eventually we may need to bump him from 2 mg Abilify to 3. He is still scared of things though like removing the training wheels or getting hurt. Does any of this sound familiar with your son? Dedee
Myrose, I just wanted to add that my son (who has PANDAS), had the frequent urination issue at one time as well. He actually just felt as though he needed to urinate but couldn't. Similiar to a bladder spasm, if you have ever had that. Anyway, when we saw Dr. Murphy, she said this is definately an issue with PANDAS children. She said they are not sure whether it may be a component of the area surronding the brain which controls bladder function that is affected by the strept antibodies, or possibley that the strept antibodies actually have some affect within the bladder itself causing these urges. Either way her suggestion was not to make an issue of it and basically accomodate the need whenever possible without comments or criticism. I know how frustrating it can be, but with my son it usually never lasted more than a couple of weeks. Now that he is on antibiotics daily he doesn't have these issues at all. Good luck with your child. Dedee
