Questions about Nystatin

Hope

Recommended Posts

Environmental Medicine Doc prescribed Nystatin. She thinks he might have yeast overgrowth. I agree from all I have read here that might be the case. I haven't filled the prescription yet. She said to take things slowly and we have started with Probiotics and Enzymes so far.

Seems like some have success with Nystatin and others don't, as with everything each child is different, I know. Are there many of you who have seen significant benefits from the Nystatin? Any of you who have seen negative effects? Trying to weigh the pros and cons...

Also, I looked up the ingredients in the oral Nystatin (ds doesn't swallow pills yet). There's artificial wild cherry flavor, banana flavor, D&C yellow #10, FD&C red #40 and sucrose in it. Argh! So hard to give medicine with all the JUNK in it when we try to avoid it in our foods.

DS just had a round of Zithromax and I had it compounded without all the additives. Insurance wouldn't pay for it. Not sure if I am going overboard by worrying about the additives or not.

Any opinions? What form of this medicine are your kids taking/have taken?

Thanks. I feel so overwhelmed and lost lately. Just trying to do what is best for my little guy! I know you can all relate!

Hi

I know others have used Nystatin but our doc was not a fan of it

initially we used caprylate (capryllic acid) plues diet and now that NOW foods has Candida Clear that is our remedy of choice (simultaneous with careful diet and Monolaurin natural antimicrobial)

We actually had bad results with Diflucan. My son was on it it for a couple of months, and we were slowly but surely increasing the dosage to kill all candida. At one point, when he was taking quite a high dosage he started exhibiting really odd behavior in school. (Like getting out of his seat during class and walking along the back of the classroom groping at the walls like a blind man...etc.) I quickly googled the side effects of Diflucan and read somewhere that a small percentage of people do exhibit strange behavior when overdosing on it. Needless to say we took him off of it and all of the strange behavior stopped.

I called the pharmacy and they said that the powder form of Nystatin is NOT for INTERNAL USE? They say it is a talc and will do funky things to your digestive tract. My script clearly says 1/4 tsp powder 2x day.

Are your kids taking powders, pills or what?

This is so confusing. I want to make him better not worse...

Thanks so much, Chemar!

I just looked up the info about the Candida Clear. I would feel so much better about using a natural method to take care of the yeast overgrowth. I am definitely going to call the doctor and tell her I don't feel comfortable with the Nystatin and am going to try this instead.

Is it true that tics can get worse during the time that you are getting rid of the candida? What should I be watching for?

Thanks again!

hello Hope

yes, when the candida begins to die it produces toxins which in turn can make tics worse

this is known as "die-off" reaction

the candida clear formula seems to help in itself with that, but we have always been advised to up intake of pure (we use reverse osmosis) water, epsom salt tubs and supps/foods that help replenish the "good" bacteria...we like natural kefir best, as well as mainting the diet that best keeps yeast at bay (we use the recipes and guidelines in the Yeast Syndrome by Walker & Trowbridge)

our doc also suggested the biofeedback (a complex resonance feedback technique whereby electro-magnetic waves are used to "neutralize" nnegative stuff....) along with acupuncture and reflexology. Our clinical acupuncture therapist is expert in all 3 and so this involves a single hour long session.
