emma1
Our family has gotten some type of upper respiratory infection -- not the flu and not strep. Everyone has had it, except my PANDAS child. However, as sometimes happens, my daughter is exhibiting more tics/ocd, even though not ill like the rest of us. I know others have experienced this, but don't remember what, if anything, one should do? Should I increase the antibiotics, or wait it out? The symptoms aren't dramatically increased, but I am noticing some where before there were none.
Chemar
Hi emma I dont have any experience with a PANDAS child so will not even attempt to answer re antibiotics, but did want to say I hope you are all beginning to feel better. No fun when family is ill...and especially mom too. also wanted to mention Monolaurin (we get ours at the local Vitamin Shoppe store and it's also on their website) It is lauric acid from coconuts and proving to be one of the most effective natural antimicrobials. We keep some here always as a family antibiotic when needed, and its part of my son's supplement program for his Crohn's Disease not sure if it can be taken with regular antibiotics so do check with your doc before giving to the PANDAS child, but was more referring to it as a help with the rest of the family
ad_ccl
we try to just let things ride out - rather than upping the antibiotics, but if things do not improve on their own or tics are at a level where they are a problem then we do a run of antibiotics - our son is on azithromycin which is an immuno modulating antibiotic - so I think that is why he improves on those antibiotics - even with a viral infection - usually within a day or so we see significant improvements - in the past we on average would have to do a run every 3 months - the last time we did a run was October - when we had strep in the house. Over the holidays we had the flu - he has a slight increase in tics, but we did not increase the antibiotics -and he got better on his own. I feel like we are starting to come out of this long tunnel with him (knock on wood). As he is getting older his symptoms are decreasing significantly. I certainly believe that this will pass.... P_Mom
ad-ccl, What great news and I will be praying your son indeed is coming out of this long tunnel, it provides so much hope to hear stories such as yours. Emma, I agree with ad-ccl, it really depends on the condition of your daughter. In our case, we will do the same, up the antibiotics IF we feel the symptoms warrant such action, even with a viral or whatever. I might try upping the Pen Vk if symptoms were significant enough, or just may let it ride, but, if the symptoms were really significant (strep, mycoplasma),we would use a different antibiotic with more immune-modulating effect, such as Zithromax. Let us know how she does and what you decide to do. Kellys
