JennyC Posted December 30, 2007 Report Posted December 30, 2007 Butter obviously has casein in it so I figured margarine but I looked through every brand at our grocery store and they all say they contain milk...what do you all use in place of butter?
Caryn Posted December 30, 2007 Report Posted December 30, 2007 Okay, I posted this in my long reply to your other post, but I will cross post my answer here for anyone popping in. 1. Spectrum Palm Oil (solid at room temperature) sold at Whole Foods and many health food stores. 2. Ghee (a solid at room temperature) Ghee is clarified butter and contains no casein. Found at whole foods.
JennyC Posted December 30, 2007 Author Report Posted December 30, 2007 Thank you so much! I havent read the other reply yet but Im off to do that right now.
ad_ccl Posted December 30, 2007 Report Posted December 30, 2007 We use Becel for heart margarine - it was the only one that had no milk products that can be found at our local grocery store - it does say not to use it for baking - when we bake with it we usually use half that and half canola oil. We have also on occasion come across goats butter.
QsMom Posted December 30, 2007 Report Posted December 30, 2007 In addition to the suggestions above, we also use Coconut oil on vegetables where we would have used butter.
JennyC Posted December 30, 2007 Author Report Posted December 30, 2007 So kids that are sensitive to casein can eat goats cheese and butter? I read somewhere that goats milk has casein in it.
kallik Posted January 11, 2008 Report Posted January 11, 2008 We found Organic Smart Balance, a whipped buttery spread, and, Earth Balance Natural Buttery Sticks at HEB plus, which do wonderfully in baked goodies. The only thing some might have to avoid is if they have a corn sensitivity. They have no casein, no dairy, no guten, no artificial flavor or color.

All I use is Organic Smart Balance and Earth Balance Spread or sticks. They are wonderful!
