Hope Posted December 4, 2007 Report Posted December 4, 2007 I know many of you have mentioned allergies to mold. My son is 8 and started having tics this past spring. He had a terrible reaction several years ago to a mold-based antibiotic. Another test also showed an allergy to mold. We had water damage in our basement a while back. We cleaned it ourselves and haven't used the basement playroom at all since. But we do go through the area to get to the laundry room but my kids never go down there. Anyway, we just had the house tested for mold and yes, they found some. Mostly, in the basement. We need to have it cleaned properly. I am concerned about the cleaning process. I don't want harsh chemicals used that could be equally bad or even worse for us to be breathing in. Anyone have this done? What is safe to do? I am ready to cry because all of our Christmas decorations are down in the basement. We can't get them out until it is all cleaned. Most of the kids Christmas presents are down there, too, since that is where we hide them. Ugh. I am so sad about this. But if it means my son and my daughters will be breathing better and their immune systems won't be compromised, I will do whatever it takes. I am scared of how much this will cost, too, but again...I don't care. I just want my kids to be healthy! Please let me know if you have ever had mold remediation done! Thanks!

mmw Posted December 5, 2007 Report Posted December 5, 2007 Hope, I am usually a "lurker" only, but your post compelled me to answer, as, unfortunately, I am all too familiar with the subject! My 6 year old son has [not officially diagnosed] PANDAS and some of his tics have occurred with severe sinus infections. I have a really good ENT who insisted we have our home checked for mold. Long story short, we did have mold which is believed to have contributed to his compromised immune system. We had mold remediation last summer, which took four weeks and unfortunately was very costly. It was almost $50,000. Ours is hopefully a more extreme case than yours but it is expensive. It is important to get a company that knows what they are doing, not a heating and air company. We went with the company that both our ENT and environmental physician use in their home. My son is doing very well now. We have also done many other things such as cutting out toxic cleaning products, food additives, doing allergy treatment, nutritional supplementation, etc. I have gotten a lot of information and encouragement from this board! mmw
