Hi, my name is Deniese and I have an 11 year old son with TS,NVLD,OCD and Anxiety. I just started to homeschool him and would love some other adults to talk to that know what I'm talking about. My family( bless them all ) just can't seem to understand so they don't ask or get involved. It can get lonely by yourself 24/7 with a child who can test your every strength over and over again. Well I look forward to speaking with yall some more. It's time for me to homeschool.

Welcome Deniese!

Glad you found us. I feel exactly the same way. My family, for the most part, does not seem to understand... mind you, my daughter's symptoms are usually quite mild, and she does not have any official diagnosis. I have contemplated homeschooling, and know that I may do it at some point in the future, especially if her symptoms get a lot worse. But I would love to do it just for the fun of it. My daughter is in grade one right now.

I find that reading the posts here soothes me. I know I'll always find some good advice, hope, inspiration, or even just understanding. I swear, this forum has been absolutely the most important thing I've found in my "research". It took quite awhile to find, too! I remember searching the internet night after night, and finding basically the same tiny bit of information about tics and Tourettes on a whole bunch of mainstream sites, and feeling just hopeless and like there HAD to be more indepth information out there... something that could help me be active and proactive about my daughter's health. And then I found it! It has helped SO much.

Anyway, nice to meet you!

Take care,

Calicat

Just curious as to if this is the first year of homeschooling and how things went prior to this year. Did your son have issues before, but this year is the worst? or was everything fine until recently? wWhat is NVLD? I figure it is a learning disability. Have you tried any alternatives such as supplements and is he on meds? Sorry to be intrusive. I hope you find a lot of support here and think of it as a year of healing. Perhaps you can try some of these things and it will be of great success and his body will be much better by the end of the year!!!!!

NVLD is Non-Verbal learning disability. He has very little short term memory.Everything has to be taught verbaly and repeditive over time for him to learn. He has an IQ of 73. He is not Autistic and you would never know that anything was wrong with him. The school system had never even heard of his disability and had no idea how to teach him. I have only been homeschooling him for two weeks now. I found a wonderful site ( http://www.time4learning.com ). It takes care of everything for you and is only $20 a month! I am loving this program. Oh, he is on Tenex and has been for almost 2 years. I only give it to him at night because I do not care if he tics but I do need it to not be extreme. He always has a tic. He has never been tic free in about 4 years. We noticed something was wrong when he was 3 and 4 because we couldn't teach him his colors and it took 2 years for him to learn the ABC's. He went through every test known to man and was finally diagnosed with Ts at the age of 9 and NLVD just about 2 months ago. It has been a long, expensive and frustrating road but I am glad to finally have some answers.

Sounds like you have a lot going on with your guy and you sound like a wonderful mom. Have you tried anything such as the supplements? This website is full of a lot of info and the nice thing is you will be home with him so you can see if anything has a positive affect on him. Does the Tenex seem to help with the tics and does he have any side effects with it?

The Tenex helps take the edge off the tics but does not stop them. The only side effect he has had was when I had him on 1 1/2 pills a day. I would notice him getting tired in the middle of the day. We are talking about putting him on supplements. I wan't to get him a complete blood work up first, being that Tenex is a blood pressure medicine.

Welcome tsmommy,

Yes, I too am interested to know if you have ever explored the biomedical nature of your son's issues. Have you ever visited a DAN doctor, even though he is not categorized as autistic, they do alot of testing for other issues that could be on the spectrum and treat these issues biomedically with supplements and dietary. I am also wondering if metals could be an issue for your son. I am convinced that if nothing else, these health strategies do help with overall health and behavioral issues.
