emma1
My daughter woke up this morning after 3 days of low dose Pen VK with a raging sore throat! I know you are supposed to be protected from strep while on this antibiotic, but does anyone know -- can you get strep while on Pen VK -- the dose is low -- and this sure looks/seems/feels like strep to me. Help!!
michele
I know alot of viruses are going around that have sore throats and colds and coughs here in N.E. Ohio. Maybe it is not strep but go get her cultured. I was under the impression the pen V 250 three times per day would keep you strep free. However the study tests from NIMH said PenV did not work for everyone with PANDAS. Has she missed any doses? We have not had strep since he was put on it in June. I hope it is just a cold. Are her tics gone since using Pen V? Michele My daughter woke up this morning after 3 days of low dose Pen VK with a raging sore throat! PANDAS_Denmark
Hi emma1 - It is for sure possible to get a strepinfection while on Pen VK. My son was on Pen VK in 6 months, and kept getting strepinfections : strep throat, impetigo ... We went to the doctors every time, and they kept claiming, that this wasn´t possible, and that he was supposed to be protected while being on this antibiotic. It wasn´t untill, I found an article on the national pharmaceutical institute about antibiotics, that I was able to convince them, that it was common, that Penicillin VK isn´t enough to kill the streps. Unfortunately this article is in danish, so it won´t help you much, but it should be possible to find an article in english too ? The article stated, that the first choise of antibiotics, when someone has a strepinfection is Penicillin V (among other things because of the fear of resistence), but if that doesn´t cure the patient, one has to consider (and try) something else, that is for example Amoxicillin or Azithromycin. Best wishes -
