ASO negative....now what?

Recommended Posts

We got an ASO test for my 4 yr old to rule out PANDAs. she had never had a diagnosed strep infection before but i thought, you never know! I jsut couldn't leave one stone unturned. Anyway, it came back negative for strep. Is that the only thing i need to do regarding a PANDAs dx? I read here about the other test, antiDNAse (I think). the ped didn't know anyting about that one. what does it measure?

so where should i turn now? the mag supp? Can a child have TOO much mag? sorry...i'm clueless in the biochem field! I htink i dropped chem in grade 11.

you know, if her mag was within normal range, could I hurt her by giving a supp? Or is this one of these vit/minerals that your body will just flush out if there's more than enough?

anyone know a good dr in the OKC area? I'd even travel to Dallas or KC.

Hello powerofprayer...I wish I had some answers for you but I'm kind of in the same boat. I haven"t had my son tested yet for strep anti-bodies and I was wondering if anyone could tell me exactly what test do I ask for?He has had strep throat several times in the past. His Dr. mentioned the last time we saw her that she had another patient who had been diagnosed with pandas but that all of this was"out of her league". (another dr had apparently diagnosed this patient) She seems willing to help but doesn't know where to start.IF someone can give me info I'd appreciatete it.THanks Lukesmom

Hi Lukesmom

Well we did an ASO titer (blood test) which i had never heard of until this forum. I had heard of the antiDNAse too....don't know if that's necessary too to completely rule out PANDAs.

The ASO came back and it just said her ASO was <25 and in range. then it says = negative strep. so i don't know if they jsut measured strep or antibodies as well. is it possible to have antibodies floatiing around in there w/o strep??

Hi powerofprayer...what a great username

Alison ( ad_ccl ) and Ronna and Dedee know more about the importance of the ASO and the AntiDNAse and the antibody levels that each is able to detect.

I have always understood it may be necessary to have both for a clearer PANDAS dx, as well as the specialized throat culture (I forget the name now) but it is more sensitive I believe than the usual swab for strep throat)

hopefully some of our members with PANDAS experience will be able to answer with more detail
