Lottie123 Posted February 27, 2007 Report Posted February 27, 2007 Hi my names charlotte and right now I feel like im going mad! I am 21 years old and things in my life are great at the mo apart from this (OCD). I think I have it infact im certain I do but I really dont want to go to the doctor and be put onto pills. Lately what im doing is: Shopping If Im shopping I cant pick up an item and pay for it I have to pick up a few until I find one that is not bad. I dont know what bad means its just I have to find one that feels ok and then nothing bad will happen in my life! Shoe Laces: I cant do up my shoe laces once I have to do it a few time before its ok and I do this with hanging clothes, Counting, Touching, Thinking, Repeating things. When I was younger Id do certain things but all of a sudden its gone bad and its effecting my life I keep crying cos I just wanna stop it. I dont think my mum or dad will believe me when I tell them I think their just gonna laugh and say dont be stupid. My bf's been great and he sees me doing it and hes trying to help but when hes not there Im doing it again. Everything I feel is like if I dont do this or that then something bad will happen to me. Its horrible! I have read up about this and it says you can get this if you have had something tramatic has happened in the past to you? Which It has! Please help me to understand more. Thank You
Chemar Posted February 27, 2007 Report Posted February 27, 2007 Lottie I want to welcome you and also encourage you to know that this is not something "crazy" you are doing It does sound like a form of OCD and the best way to get help is to see a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist (a specially trained psychologist) who can help you work thru these feelings and actions to help you cope with them and understand more of where they are coming from Yes, trauma and even severe illness, especially viral or bacterial, can set these things off Our board here is filled with many caring members, but we dont have anyone really qualified to help here...which is why I frequently refer members here to also visit the forums at PsychCentral.com because they are very active and have people who will be able to support you. But best of all the admin there is a psychologist, Dr John Grohol who also does FREE Live Chat sessions there every Friday afternoon to help people Here is the main website www.psychcentral.com and here is a link to their forums PsychCentral Community Forums

Chemar Posted April 22, 2007 Report Posted April 22, 2007 Hi Leigh I dont have OCD but my son does The Cognitive Behavioral Therapy done by a trained and qualified psychologist was by far the most helpful to him, but he also needed to take the supplements that helped to increase his serotonin levels, and be careful not to have artificial foods in his diet

Chemar Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 Hi Leigh as I explained in my PM, my son used serotonin boosting supplements like 5HTP, Inositol, methionine as well as having Cognitive Behavioral therapy we also doscovered that for him, as for many others, artificial food additives are major triggers for OCD, especially food coloring, sweeteners like Nutrasweet(aspartame) and Splenda(sucralose) and also MSG(monosodium glutamate) and high fructose corn syrup He did try medication for a year (Luvox) but it actually made things worse, not better
