Stomach issues from ABX?

Recommended Posts

Wanted to post 9 year old sons blood test results:

Strep Anti-DNAaseB 1190

High IgG 819

High IgM 1722

BUN/Creatinine 47

Based on those numbers the Doctor put him on Augmentin in morning and Biaxin at night. Seems like quite a bit,

Also included Culterelle Probiotic.

Like I said in previous post he went to be feeling nauseas, Not sure if its related.

I know from experience that I only start one thing at a time or I'm confused about what caused what. When the doctor names more than one thing to start, I always ask what he wants me to start first with my son. Our usual rule is at least 3 days between starting something new. Three in my family on probiotics at high doses and no side effects. I do know that some people are much more sensitive.

I hope you figure out the nausea issue.

Has your son been tested for Lyme disease?

I would suspect one of the two abx. before I would the probiotic. Also in case the doctor did not tell you be sure to give the probiotic at least two hours away from any abx. Are there any other symptoms of stomach flu. Like fever, diarreah, etc... I would definitely want my son on a good antibiotic with those results, unfortunately though it just may take a while to figure out what works best. Call the doctor if he continues to be nauseous.

Hello friend ,

Just wanted to chime in. Those are two strong antibiotics so it could be either one of them! Definitely need a good probiotic!

My dd7 takes Florastor and it can be taken anytime. I personally cannot take Augmentin as it really bothers my stomach!

Good luck!

most on this list see some stomach issues and it is hard to figure out what causes them. the condition, abx, probiotics? virus? all can cause it. and probably more than one is contributing at any one time.

larger point is that stomch is one of the three parts of this condition, immune system and behavior (brain) being the other two. so, the only advice I have is that stomach should be approached as an important part of the overall picture.

in our case, zytromax was the cause of daily stomach problems for dd. but stopping zytro did not eliminate entirely her stomach issues. here and there, she is nauseaus and has stomach pains.

I would make sure to 1) take antibiotics with food, and 2) dose some good probiotics, ideally a couple of hours away from the abx dosing. Culturelle (lactobillus gg) is supposed to be impervious to abx, but you still probably stand the best chance of gaining full benefits if you stagger the probiotic and abx dosing as best you can. Florastor (or saccharomyces boulardii -- Florastor is one name brand) is a beneficial yeast which is both impervious to abx and helps crowd out bad yeast, like candida. You may have to experiment a bit with probiotics and dosages, but it can be good to mix them up a bit and use more than just a single strain.

Like the others said, to the extent you can, adding one thing at a time helps you pinpoint what makes good changes and what makes more problematic ones. In our experience, though the antibiotics definitely set a few things off balance initially, as he adjusted to them, everything settled down.

Nausea seems to have settled. My spouse had a stomach virus a few days back so perhaps he caught a bit of it. Currently on day 3 of ABX regimen along with probiotic. Seems to still have an appetite. However not as big of one.

Would these readings possibly be reason for his defiant behavior thru the years or would that be a behavioral issue in and of itself? .He had many, many ear infections as a baby. We had to have tubes put in. Doctor said his high Strep, IgM and IgG levels could also effect behavior. Has anyone experienced this?

High IgM 1722

High IgG 819

Strep Anti-DNAaseB 1190

Thanks so much for all the advice.

Yes, I think his previous behaviors could quite likely be tied to his current PANDAS/PANS diagnosis.

My DS's history is quite similar to yours: chronic ear infections until bilateral tube surgery at the age of three. Sensory issues, highly-sensitive and anxious preschooler and into first grade. Diagnosed with "regular OCD" at age 6 because we couldn't find a strep link at the time (he was completely classically asymptomatic -- no fever, no sore throat).

Fast-forward to age 12 when his behavior took the most dramatic turn ever . . . downhill. Care team (psych, therapist, ped) attributed it to a "waxing" of his OCD, but the change was so dramatic and dysfunctional, it didn't fit. Thanks to Beth Maloney's book "Saving Sammy," we found out that even asymptomatic kids can be suffering from strep and/or the autoimmune response it inspires. Got blood tests which attested to high titers, and that set us on the PANDAS path.

There's some compelling research about otitis medea (ear infections) hosting strep bacteria, and I believe that was the root of my DS's long PANDAS journey. Even after the tubes helped mitigate the ear infections, he had respiratory issues (chronic congestion, sinusitis, colds, allergies) for years leading up to the PANDAS dx. Now, after 2 years of abx and continuation of a number of supplements, his upper respiratory issues have pretty much disappeared.

Good luck to you on your journey!

I screamed at my DS this morning and feel awful about it. I'm really losing it. He was complaining about everything, Would not eat, would not take his ABX. Wanted to wear shorts to school (its 30 degrees outside). Would not take no for an answer, Just driving all of us crazy. Anyway I snapped and screamed at him. After I put him on bus for school I literally just fell to my knees and sobbed. I cried all the way to work. I felt so bad for yelling at him. I'm having such a tough time dealing with him anymore. His disposition is so bad. Everyone leaves the room when he walks into it. No one wants to be around him. He's on day six of ABX. I stopped his magnesium but better add it back into his diet. Its just that everything is such a battle. I'm growing weary. This has been going on for years and years.

I know exactly how you feel. Mornings used to be terrible at my house. Lots of screaming, tantrums and fit throwing. I would always cry on my way to work then sit in the car in the parking lot and pull myself together before going in. I kept extra make up in my car because it was such a common thing. I am so sorry you are going through this.

I am confused about the IgG and IgM results. Normally Strep titers are ran as ASo and AntiDNase. IgG and IgM is usually measuring something like Mycoplasma or Lyme. To my knowledge there isn't a test that measures strep in that method. Can you look at your tests again and see exactly what those are looking at?

Is your Doctor a PANDAS / PANS specialist? I see that you are giving your son Augmentin once a day and Biaxin once a day. What is the dose on those antibiotics? It's not unusual to be on two antibiotics to fight PANS. My kids are actually on three. However, each of the ones that you mention usually are given twice daily to have full benefit. So you are potentially giving two antibiotics but neither are at a dose to be fully beneficial. It would be better to be on Biaxin twice daily at it's full benefit (JMHO). I'm just not understanding the logic of two antibiotics at half the dose unless the idea is to work up to a full dose of both.

I don't mean to be negative. I'm just giving my opinion based on what I have experienced over the years of dealing with this. I feel for what you are going through. It's a horrible experience. Hope things turn around soon.

My kiddo is 70lbs and is on Augmentin XR 1000mg twice a day, and zithromax 375mg once a day (zithromax is usually a once a day dose) for her prophylaxis.

Both augmentin and biaxin are usually given twice a day in order to reach an effective blood plasma level.

We use Healthy Origins Probiotic, Sundown Inulin prebiotics, Jarrow Sacc B, Bio-enhanced curcumin, and home made milk kefir to help with gut issues.

Almost all of my kiddos behavioural issues are OCD, anxiety and fear related :(. Yes, my level of patience is a HUGE challenge. To help boost your patience, keep telling yourself he did not ask for this, and if he is like my kiddo, he would give almost anything for ALL this to go away. Then tell yourself you are doing your absolute best for him, and try to give yourself a break when you do lose it.
