athurman
My son was recently diagnosed with PANS. His doctor is strongly recommending that he get the flu vaccine. I have strong reservations about giving my son something that could further injure him. As I understand it vaccine damage is difficult to recover from. Also since PANS is an auto immune response it doesn't make sense to me to give a child with an auto-immune issue a flu vaccine. I would appreciate any advice or information anyone has on this subject. Ashley
rowingmom
Welcome. Please come and join us on the PANS/PANDAS (and Lyme) forum. Sorry to say I don't think too many of us check the Member Introductions forum. We are too busy yacking about PANS/PANDAS . In the mean time, here are some posts from a topic started April 2013: http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=20404&hl=%2Bflu+%2Bvaccine If you would like to do a search of any topic, look at the top right hand portion of the screen, just under your member name. nicklemama
Come join us in the main PANDAS /PANS forum. My sons PANS was triggered by flumist. I just returned from the conference where it was highly recommended to get the flu vax but do not use the nasal flumist. Personally, I will not do either, given my experience. Dr Swedo said there will be a flare after the injectable vaccine and it will need to be treated. If your child is being followed and treated by someone that really knows PANDAS then you might consider it. If you are new to PANDAS and are not getting good treatment and your child is not stable yet, I'd avoid it like the plague. Just my two cents. 3bmom
I would avoid like the plague also. my DS reacts to others who are sick because his immune system revs up and that is the exact purpose of a vaccine. Rev up the system to create antibodies against whatever the vaccine is targeting. It is my unscientific opinion to why young babies get autism after vaccination. Since they are already at an inflammatory state they also will not methylate the thermisol, (still in some flu vaccines) or aluminum also in vaccines. If you can I posted about GMO and glyphosphate in our food. Today only is an interview with MIT PHD Stephanie Seneff explaining the collapse of our detoxification pathways. rowingmom
Live attenuated influenza vaccine ehances colonization of strep. pneumoniae and staph aureus in mice. http://mbio.asm.org/content/5/1/e01040-13.long http://www.greenmedinfo.com/blog/live-flu-vaccines-increase-infectious-bacteria-counts-100-fold-mice The main implication of this study is that, "live attenuated viral vaccines may have unintended consequences on important human bacterial pathogens unrelated to the vaccine target species." PowPow
My pans child had the flu vaccine, no problems. She had it due to some other immune suppression meds she is on. The flu this year has been deadly in our area. Both my husband and I work in first line emergency medical care and I am grateful that my child with an autoimmune disease can be protected. She recieved the shot in oct 2013.
rowingmom
I'm glad your child doesn't react, but several children here have had problems with attenuated vaccines. I thought the association of live vaccine with strep colonization might be of interest to some parents. It's best to make informed decisions, and this information is not being widely circulated. Nicklemama, the conference said to do injectable vaccine vs. mist? I had heard that before. But when did Swedo say "there will be a flare after injectable." When we were stable and doing well we thought getting the flu would be worse than getting the vaccine so we jumped and had only very minimal change in behavior. However, when we were not stable at all and still really in the trenches we had a horrible, terrible flare after flu vaccine. I think it depends on state of health at the time. I basically just ran out of time to get his done before my husband had total knee surgery at the end of Decemeber. You guessed it...the the only one who did not get vaccine got the flu. Confirmed Flu A in mid Jan. He missed 4 days of school follwed by the worst bilateral ear infection EVER. His ears were horrible-- eardrums so red they were nearly black and his hearing was diminished for nearly a month. He was on Tamiflu, Zithromax and then Omnicef for 2 weeks. The flu and illness caused him to be behind in school and flaring of his OCD behaviors. The rest of us that had the vaccine have not been been sick all winter. Next year, he will get vaccine. Injection not mist. I'm not a fan of live viruses for vaccines. For myself or my children. I don't think the flu vax could have caused any more problems than him actually getting the illness. Flu was problematic in its' own right.

Hopeny
I have chosen vaccines, I feel the risks of these diseases are too great and with so many taking exclusions eradicated illnesses are making a comeback. My former ped under vaccinated my little one by error (I trusted them never checked) and she got whopping cough at age 3. Were the scariest days of my life. It sucks to manage a mild flare if that happens but I think it's better than watching your child helplessly and praying for their life.

riffleshell
I think the flu vaccine is a bit of roulette. You know your kid and you have the best sense of your odds. This fall, just as my son dealing with the worst of PANDAS (so far), the flu was very bad in our area. I wrung my hands but decided not to get him vaccinated. The rest of us did get the flu vaccine. Luckily, he didn't get the flu, at least not yet. (Knock on wood!) He's doing much better now and I absolutely would get him vaccinated if it were the start of flu season today. I think his system could deal with the vaccine now without a major relapse, but if he had the flu itself, he might be in trouble. Rowingmom's links were very interesting. I had no idea about that.
