Could it be Mono?

I sound like a broken record at this point, but...

DS 14.5 has had trouble waking up off and on since mid December. Saturday we got his blood results back (taken January 2) and his ASO and anti-DNase B have risen significantly.

He started Clindomycin on Saturday and will add Rifampin on Friday morning. He has been sleeping almost all day since Saturday (and he missed school Thursday and Friday too). Wew wake him for meds and is up for a few hours at night. He eats dinner, watches his iPhone, talks to his brother and then cannot fall asleep easily. I called Dr.T and he said this isn't a normal reaction to abx. That I should take his to the pediatrician and check for mono.

Can you have mono without fever, sore throat?

Glad you're getting him tested. My ds12 just had Mono. He was extremely tired (but not sleepy like yours), minor sore throat, stomach ache and bad headache for weeks. He never had a real fever - just an occasional low-grade fever in the beginning. His IgM was neg, but his IgG, which we just happened to have tested last June, had more than doubled. The doctor called it more of a "chronic" infection because of that. Each child is different. Our neighbor said he was sick for most of 4th grade with mono, and a friend's son was sick for 3 weeks last year, but had a very high fever and his throat was a mess.

Make sure you look at/get a copy of the labs, because if the IgG is elevated and IgM isn't, they might just tell you he's negative, when it could be that he was exposed earlier in life, and is now having a reoccurance.

My DD had epstein-barr - which causes mono - last yr. She only had a fever in the beginning but had lethargy and a mild sore throat that lasted months. L-lysine is what did the trick for her. She felt better within days of starting it and was back to school 2 weeks later.

<<L-lysine is what did the trick for her.>>

What is L-lysine? a prescription or OTC?

Waiting for results. He seems more awake today, but still wont shower or go to the bathroom. Says he wants his life back, but wont do anything but play on his phone : (

I guess I should be happy that he isn't sleeping anymore, and he ate breakfast which is one more meal than the past 5 days.

Praying that the Clindomycin does the trick with the strep #s!!!

L-lysine is an amino acid - found in many foods and essential for proper body functions (along with many, many other nutrients). It acts as an anti-viral against certain viruses, including epstein-barr, herpes viruses and HIV. It gets rid of cold sores (herpes) and canker sores inside the mouth. You can google and also find research papers on Pubmed. It's OTC - can get it on amazon or any health food store. My grocery store even carries it in the vitamin section - CVS probably does too.

I always came across "epstein barr - the virus that causes mono" - implying they were slightly different - but never came across an explanation of how. In my simple mind, I decided mono seemed to be a teen version of EBV but the symptoms are essentially the same as far as i could ever tell.
