croatian mum
hello, it has been a while.. I have a question. WMy ds 12, had his 1st IVIG 6 month ago, and things are definitly better than before IVIG. He still has some tics so we will most probably recive a 2nd IVIG in 2-3 month. But, he is now in 6th grade, and he was soposed to recive hepatitis B vaccine 1 month ago, but we skiped it. i told them he is sick. I was thinking about not vaccining him at all, but, I'm also aware that he can get Hep. B from IVIG. So, not so shure now what to do? Do I skip vaccine and pray that he will not get hep. B after IVIG; or vaccine him, and than wait for 1 - 1,5 year for another IVIG? (1,5 year because in our country hep. B vaccine is split in 3 doses - must be 2-3 month between each dose; and I know that a person can recive IVIG only if it has been at least 4 month after vaccine). Pretty confused with all the info on the internet, so, I belive and hope that some of You will know what's the best. Than You for Your answers
3boysmom
I bet Dr. B. Would say no. We were told " no vacinations". The goal is to reset or calm the immune system. I would check with your PANDAS doctor.
tpotter
I bet Dr. B. Would say no. We were told " no vacinations". The goal is to reset or calm the immune system. I would check with your PANDAS doctor. In my personal opinion, I would not get the vaccine. You want to calm the immune system down, not try to get it to start fighting things again. Again...just my personal opinion.
Missmom
Not sure if your doctor can do this but thinking you can check hep b. titers to see if he is still protected. I am assuming he had hep b vaccine when he was younger and this one at 12 yo would be a booster. He may have enough protection already and then you would not have to worry about the booster. peglem
You have to weigh the risk of him getting hepB vs the risk of him getting a reaction to the vaccine. I believe you'll find that reactions to the vaccine are pretty common (including autoimmune reactions) and the chances of getting hepB from ivig are pretty slim. But, take my opinion with a grain of salt as I believe the HepB vaccine the day my daughter was born is what set her up for all the problems she's had w/ her immune and neurological systems...so, I'm a bit biased. mama2alex
In the US there haven't been any documented cases of Hep B from IVIG, but it sounds like you aren't in the US. Can you find information on the regulation of IVIG in your country? I have no real advice otherwise, except I agree you can ask for the Hep B titers to be run If your child had this vaccine earlier in life. We are no longer vaccinating, but everyone's decision process has to be different depending on their circumstances.
cobbiemommy
I'm pretty sure Dr. K would say NO to any vaccines, but your situration is a little different in that you are outside of US. Why not send him a quick email and see what he says since I believe you have seen him before. Keep your question brief and to the point in an email to him. My apologies to him and his staff. pr40
This is what our Dr suggested about vaccination "Specifically, I suggest that they (you) (1) avoid, if possible, multiple vaccinations at the same time and (2) to screen her for any inflammatory condition. If does have an inflammatory condition I would recommend that you put off her vaccination until she has fully recovered." Our DD did not have IVIG yet. bigmighty
Not positive, but I seem to recall being told by NIH not to do vaccines within one year of IVIG because they probably wouldn't hold and you'd have to get them all again. Perhaps you could do some internet research and see if that's accurate.
croatian mum
Than You all for Your answers. I was thinking the same - to check the titers first. AndI was also thinking about not vaccine him, but now I'm shure I won't! Iwill check with our dr. before IVIG; but, I also belive that the risk of getting hep. B from IVIG is very very small. We still have 2 month of time to think about it. Will let You know what we have decided. He is doing well now, so we don't want to do anything to put him in any kind of risk! thank You
