3 Year Licking His Bottom Lip

Hi Everyone,

It's been a long time since I've posted here, but we are doing well. For those of you that don't know me, I have TS. My 3 year old licks his bottom lip leaving a red dry spot under his lip. Do you think this could be a tic or is this something that 3 year olds do? I've always just ignored the lip licking and put ointment on it when it gets red. His babysitter draws attention to it and tells him to stop licking his lip that he's making it sore, etc. I'm not sure to say something to the babysitter about just ignoring the lip licking or just let them keep asking him to stop as I don't know if he can stop or not. I went back to work after being home for the summer today and they said he was doing it a lot this morning. What do you think? I haven't seen any other signs of tics yet in him. He does seem to have some sensory issues (loud things, feeling of things, etc.) and he just qualified for speech therapy due to his articulation. His language skills are way high, but he's hard to understand.

Hi Carolyn :)

well it is hard to say as yes, it is a recognized tic but whether your son is doing it as a tic or for some other reason?? is almost impossible to know at this young age.

If it is a tic then the babysitter is making it worse by focusing on it. IO assume she knows your rules about healthy foods and is not giving him anything that could be triggering it?

when my son had a lip tic, we found that soaking a chamomille tea bag in some warn water and then applying the bag to the irritated area really helped to soothe it . Drinking the tea is also calming.
