OT: Dye name...made from bugs

Help me out here, please.....what is the name of the food dye/coloring made from the ground up bugs? I was speaking with someone today and I couldn't remeber the name of it-drove me crazy and I can't search BT old posts.

 

I was having a great conversation with some teachers about food dyes but couldn't remember that name!!!

Thank you, thank you Laurensmom and Chemar . It was driving me buggy (bad pun!!) and now I know.

 

BTW....I have thought of this in the past and never asked.......are there natural food colorrings available commercially? If one is baking and wanted to tint something, have you ever seen them from plants at the commercial or natural food markets?

our health store carries beet extract (for red colour) and blueberry for blue but I havent seen others (must confess I havent really looked!)

I also saw something the other day that had grape skin extract for red colour

The Squirrel's Nest is a store I know of that sells natural candies and foods. I think they might sell all natural food colorings too. www.squirrels-nest.com
