mar Posted May 8, 2012 Report Posted May 8, 2012 I am curious about tonsils being removed and strep. Dd and ds get strep about 2 to 3 times a year from what i know ( where it was positive). I'm curious if getting this done helped your children from getting strep. Was it worth it? I was thinking about this route but only if it truly helps. I had strep a lot as a child and was going to get them out but my mom backed out b/c she was afraid. I only had strep a couple of times as an adult. I know someone who got them taken out b/c o constant sour throats but ended up getting sour throats after. So don't want to put ds through this if it doesn't help. Mar
airial95 Posted May 8, 2012 Report Posted May 8, 2012 My son gas had over a dozen positive throat culturrs in the 2 years pre T&A. For 6 weeks post op he was 100% symptom free. He eveb gained close to 10 lbs during thay time because his ocd was completely gone. He tested positive 6 weeks post op (around the first of the year) within days of ending his post op abx. He's since had 4 positive cultures and myco (currently). While it didnt solve our chronic infection issue, i would absolutely do it again in a heartbeat. The 6 weekss of total recovery was more than we had since onset in may 2009 and it gave ua renewed energy, strength and hope thay we were not dealing witg a "new normal" and "functional" or "managable" were goals that were selling our son short.
ptcgirl Posted May 8, 2012 Report Posted May 8, 2012 My daughter had 9 glorious months of completely 100% normal symptom-free and drug-free life after having T & A removed. Then it all came rushing back with Lyme and sinus infections. I'm thrilled she had this time to have a childhood again. I wish it were longer, but I would do it again. Absolutely. Good luck with your decision. : )
minimaxwell Posted May 8, 2012 Report Posted May 8, 2012 You should explore this dr's blog. he believes that the reason there is so much Strep now is because all these kids have their tonsils. years ago almost everyone had them removed. It is an interesting theory. http://beverlyhillsshrink.blogspot.com/2012/01/pandas-silent-pandemic.html I am so glad my DD had hers removed, only strep 1 time after removal. There is a PANDAS freindly ENT practice at MASS Eye and EAR. If your child had PANDAS they will schedule you right away for T&A surgery.
MMC Posted May 8, 2012 Report Posted May 8, 2012 I enjoyed watching this video. Our DS13 is getting his tonsils and adnoids out next month. We went back to Dr Latimer last month and she referred us to Dr Harley, an ENT at Georgetown. He understands PANDAS, says he can get insurance approval and is doing the T&A June 15th. So, we are driving back up there to get this done and stay one night in the hospital. Then, most likely, repeat plasmapheresis a few weeks later. We are so hoping and praying this will be what we have missed these past 3 years. Dr Latimer said his tonsils could be harboring strep or some other bacteria that abx just will not clear. She is mainly concerned about his apparent anorexia, as his weight gain has been flat for a long time. He has very little appetite and has not shown any signs of puberty...will be 14 in June. He still struggles with numerous tics every day, ADHD, some OCD. We had not seen Dr Latimer in about two years and know we made the right decision to see her again. And Dr Harley is great...I hate we have to drag DS back up there (he is not looking forward to it), but Dr Harley really undestands PANDAS and will get his tonsils and adnoids tested after they are out.
