Thinkandreceive Posted April 8, 2012 Report Posted April 8, 2012 HI all, Did anyone have an experience where a operation or surgery trigger symptoms or increased symptoms? When my son was 16 months (after vaccines) he started showing a few signs of autism. He became more anxious and toe walked. Then it was chronic sinus and ear infections. 5 months after that we got ear tubes put in. The following day he was EXTREMELY anxious....not just for a few days, weeks, but now onto a year later. He also lost speech following that. Became more aggressive, and more ocd. After strep way more ocd, anxious, ect. He has been diagnosed with both autism and pandas although probably losing the autism diagnosis soon because his speech has sky rocketed in the last year. Also doesn't have classic signs of autism, but during a flare you'd never know. He also go this T&A removed, and even though on Antibiotics still had a severe pandas flare post op. Of course his sisters had strep that week. I'm interested to hear if any others have experience anything similar to this. Also if any conclusions have been made about the procedure. What causes this? the nitric oxide? immune response? Thank in advance for any help.
minimaxwell Posted April 8, 2012 Report Posted April 8, 2012 Just a thought... have you considered removing his sisters tonsils? My friends dd had severe PANDAS. Her ds never showed signs of strep. Her daughter couldn't stand to be in the same room with her son and it was tearing the family apart. She had blood work done on her son and his numbers were thru the roof. She immediatly scheduled a T&A for him. The dr. said his tonsils were so scarred from Strep. Glad to report he is no longer infecting his sister and they now even play together. This has not happened in well over a year. What dose of abx do you give him?
Kiera Posted April 8, 2012 Report Posted April 8, 2012 (edited) With T&A when they cut the tonsils out you're exposing any organisms in the Ts & As directly into the bloodstream. Did they culture the Ts and As post op? I asked for them to do my ds's and they had pseudomonas in them so needed cipro for 10days to treat it (need correct antibiotic to treat the infection). dut Posted April 8, 2012 Report Posted April 8, 2012 Hi - You could see a flare form infection released into the bloodstream. It could also be vascular changes impacting the blood brain barrier from general anesthesia and allowing any circulating autoantibodies present access to the brain. It could also be the nitrous oxide, if your child has a MTHFR polymorphism that impacts the methylation cycle. Nitrous oxide can be issue for these kids as it lowers B12 to possibly drastic levels for some kids with these genetic mutations. In very rare instances it has been fatal. I imagine for some kids that the sudden lowering of B12 could maybe induce a flare. Nitrous oxide also interferes with methionine synthesis and, consequently, incresases homocysteine. High homocysteine levels can negatively impact the integrity of the blood brain barrier. This could also be of increased importance if your child has a MTHFR polymorphism. Here's a quick link to a paper looking at this but there was a great article that someone posted on here re: using anesthesia in, specifically, autistic kids but I am sure the principles apply elsewhere too. I'll see if I can find it again.... http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21680854
