What are the doses of Omnicef and Augmentin and how much does your son weigh?

(I ask b/c I recently heard of a 125 pound child that was on 250mg of Augmentin daily to treat PANDAS...I'm like WHAT? That's a crazy low dose!)

 

He weighs 94lbs and is on 250mg Augmentin Daily and 1000mg of Omnicef. The Augmentin has been standard over the last year but the Omnicef was just added in February.

 

I will look into the xclear since he does have sinus infections often- that is what causes the flare ups. Also he is better than 2 years ago but about the same as one year ago so IVIG is still a question for me. I guess I want to know that I tried it all first.

Okay...not to dis these docs, but I can't believe 250mg once daily Augmentin is going to do much of anything for PANDAS.

 

Saving Sammy was on Augmentin XR 1000 mg twice daily ... he regressed on lower doses. I think he was about 90 or 100 pounds.

 

Worried Dad's son didn't really start to improve (even after IVIG) until he did the Saving Sammy doses of Augmentin.

 

My own dd (on full-strength Azith 250mg/day--90 pounds) recently got an rx of 875mg 2x daily of Augmentin for an ear infection.

 

So what is 250mg once daily of Augmntin going to do for a 94 pounder...that's about 1/10 of the daily dose Sammy got.

 

Plus, Augmentin is made up of Amoxcillin, which has a 1/2 life that isn't much longer than Pen...and I KNOW you can't give pen 1x daily.

I would also think about full-strength Azith (500mg/day for the first 2 mo., then consider a lower dose) if the Omnicef doesn't seem to be helping. I know the East Coast docs don't like it, except for Dr. T. He has sometimes even used it with other abs (Azith. plus Augmentin).

 

 

 

Azith is the 4th antibiotic we tried, and the one that really made a difference.
