Effects of Coconut Oil on AD and other diseases

Recommended Posts

Interesting article, thanks!

If you do a search here for "coconut oil," you'll find some older threads on this supplement; a member or two some time ago had hit upon coconut oil and was a big proponent. I think there's some additional research out there, too.

We've been giving coconut oil for about a year now ourselves, and though it's difficult to tease out which supplement is helping what, and when, my journal does indicate some noticable improvement in DS's behavior shortly after starting coconut oil for the first time.

I have been using Nutiva Organic extra virgin coconut oil for several months. I use it on our toast, bagels, pancakes, etc. instead of butter. It taste great! I had used some of the store bought brands and the flavor was very bland. Not all coconut oil is created equal.

I cook with in when I can. The taste is pretty strong, so you can only use it in recipes that compliment it. I added it to vegi soup and that was pretty gross, lol. I never made that mistake again. But it is awesome in most bake goods and it makes your house smell so good.

I have also been using it on my dry skin and it is the better than any lotion that I have ever used. It has even faded my suns spots (tinea versicolor). It is also a great alternative to chap stick and taste amazing.

If your looking for a good quality coconut oil, I highly recommend Nutiva. It cost a little more than the brand walmart sells, but there is no comparision in quality and taste.

Great tip - DS has tinea versicolor that is very tenacious!

  • 5 months later...

Interesting that this thread was resurrected today. I just got off the phone with my mom; she and my dad live about 1,000 miles away from us, so we don't see them often. My dad has been suffering from some severe short-term memory loss and confusion for the last 18 months or so, following general anaesthesia for hip surgery. All the doctors told us that lingering confusion after anaesthesia for seniors was common, and that he would eventually come back around, but he never has. He's fairly blase about his memory lapses and moments of confusion, but my mom is having a tough time with it.

Anyway, I had a paper in hand on the impact of coconut oil on Alzheimer's and dementia, and I shared that with my mom about 3 months ago. Since then she's been religious about making sure Dad gets at least two tablespoons of coconut oil daily, either via diet or supplements.

Lo and behold, she says she's seeing some improvement. Now, in the mornings, the two of them sit and read the paper at the breakfast table, and then they talk about the stories they've read, the people in the them, etc. He never would've been able to do that 6 months ago.

Now, is it the coconut oil? Or is his brain healing otherwise? Don't know, but it's enough to make my mom invest in massive shipments of the stuff from Amazon! :D

Sadly, we recently found out ds is epi-pen-toting allergic to coconut, so we no longer use it in our house. But we do use evening primrose oil topically and have had good skin results with that, too. Just thought I'd mention in case there are others who can't do coconut.

Yes...anesthesia has been linked with Alzheimers:

New research adds to the growing evidence that anesthesia and surgery may be associated with the progression of chronic brain diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease.

"We have long sought a clearer picture of the true impact of anesthesia and surgery on the central nervous system," study author Dr. Roderic Eckenhoff, the Austin Lamont Professor of Anesthesia at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, said in a university news release
