OK, I JUST HAVE TO SAY, THAT FOR 12 YEARS...MY CHILD NEVER SLEPT. NEVER GOT TIRED. RAN OUT OF THE HOUSE THROUGH THE NIGHT. WEIRD PSYCHOTIC, RACING BRAIN. SEVERE OCD.

Doctors tried all kinds of medications to stop OCD. Trileptal, gabapentin, depakote, celexa, luvox, melatonin, prozac. And NOTHING worked. It all made her more hyper. Well,....I tried magnesium yesterday. Gave teeny bits through out day and she got tired and slept!!!!! Who knows if it will last, but this has NEVER happened. What is this all about??? Even lyrica, and clonodine would not work. Why on earth is magnesium working?????? Could she have a serious magnesium deficiency??? Hope it lasts.

I believe long term use of antibiotics causes magnesium deficiency. The rub is, magnesium sometimes decreases the effectiveness of the antibiotics. I know magnesium is listed as one of the (in some people's experience) effective supplements for mood improvement/anxiety relief, OCD treatment.

My dd's anxiety (which caused her to not be able to sleep) was helped a lot by taking GABA and balancing her neurotransmitters. Finding the imbalances of what we need naturally I believe helps more than anything. Seeing a natural doc who looks at all this stuff has really made a difference for us. I hope it continues to work for you and you all get some good sleep and rest!

*I have never heard that correlation between antibiotics and magnesium.

I do know Lyme and co. can bring about magnesium deficientcy.

So glad it is helping your daughter!

Perhaps I am doing too much research.... If Magnesium is helping, that is awesome (!!!), and I would assume there was a deficiency. Here is some of the documentation from which I made those comments.

Antibiotics --The absorption of quinolone antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin (Cipro) and moxifloxacin (Avelox), tetracycline antibiotics, including tetracycline (Sumycin), doxycycline (Vibramycin), and minocycline (Minocin), and nitrofurantoin (Macrodandin), may be diminished when taking magnesium supplements. Therefore, magnesium should be taken 1 hour before or 2 hours after taking these medications to avoid interference with absorption.

And from Wikipedia:

Antibiotics (i.e. aminoglycoside, amphotericin, pentamidine, gentamicin, tobramycin, viomycin) block resorption in the loop of Henle. 30% of patients using these antibiotics have hypomagnesemia,

Our DAN just suggested that we try Magnesium Glycinate because it is a 'calming nutrient'. Just ordered it through the mail, hope to start it next week.

I agree with using magnesium Glycinate and keeping it away from any abx. I give Mag Glycinate the same time I give probiotics (mid day and before bed).

Try to start working in Epsom salts baths before bed (they are so calming) as well as metatonin XR (low dose is best). Also consider ibuprofen 3x/day until things start to calm down. There are also different types of tea that can have a very calming effect. Other things you can try: Niacin (vitamin B3) is a natural tranquilizer. Pyridoxine (vitamin B6) is critical in the production of neurotransmitters that prevent anxiety. Also, try L-theanine, which is involved in the formation of the calming neurotransmitter, gamma amino butyric acid (GABA). It also naturally stimulates the release of serotonin and dopamine. Remove dyes and additives from diet. Avoid sugar and caffeine. Turn off wireless and electronics at night. Just a few suggestions. So glad to hear the magnesium is working!

We've used magnesium in the past and will be starting it again mainly for tics. I first started it after reading Burrascano's paper "MANAGING LYME DISEASE, 15th edition", September, 2005

"Magnesium deficiency is very often present and quite severe. Hyperreflexia, muscle twitches, myocardial irritability, poor stamina and recurrent tight muscle spasms are clues to this deficiency. Magnesium is predominantly an intracellular ion, so blood level testing is of little value. Oral preparations are acceptable for maintenance, but those with severe deficiencies need additional, parenteral dosing: 1 gram IV or IM at least once a week until neuromuscular irritability has cleared."

Further in the document: "MAGNESIUM (required) Magnesium supplementation is very helpful for the tremors, twitches, cramps, muscle soreness, heart skips and weakness. It may also help in energy level and cognition. The best source is magnesium L-lactate dehydrate (“Mag-tab SR”, sold by Niche Pharmaceuticals: 1-800-677-0355, and available at Wal-Mart). DO NOT rely on “cal-mag”, calcium plus magnesium combination tablets, as they are not well absorbed. Take at least one tablet twice daily. Higher doses increase the benefit and should be tried, but may cause diarrhea. In some cases, intramuscular or intravenous doses may be necessary."

I just ordered another bottle myself as my son has started tic'ing a lot lately and specifically asked for it. We stopped previously as I could not tell if it was doing anything or not. The "SR" in Mag-tab SR stands for sustained release (slow release) and are less likely to cause diarrhea.

Bill,

FWIW - we used a bottle of the Mag-tab and it was well tolerated. But as the pill cabinet got more crowded with bottles, and the monthly supplement bill started looking like my winter heating bill, we switched to a regular 400 mg magnesium glycinate, cut in half (so each kid takes 200 mg/day). It seems to have a similar benefit at far less money. Magnesium+B6+zinc+D3 seem to help brain fog.

If money were no object, I might have stayed with the mag-tab, tho the kids didn't like the pill size. But if costs become an issue, I think there are acceptable alternatives. Like Nancy, we give at bedtime with probiotics, 2+ hrs after abx.

Great info, thanks! We will take ours 2 hours away from the abx. We are going to try adding GABA after the magnesium glycinate. We were also suggested taurine.

I recently tried taurine for my son for about 2 weeks and it made his tics MUCH WORSE. I stopped it.Just FYI.
