Guest
I know this sounds silly, but I've became addicted to butter. I've been using earth balance butter, a non dairy, soy based butter. It's so bad, I could literally eat the butter alone. Any ideas on if it's the soy allergy, taste, or something else? Are there any other options for butter that aren't dairy or soy? Sydsmom
What about almond butter? Or natural peanut butter?
Giselle
Hi Carolyn, we use a margarine that is made from cotton seed oil. It comes both as stick butter that is great for cooking with and a spread that tastes wonderful. It is made by a company called Mothers and is actually kosher. The people at Mrs. Robens recommended it and I get it from Kosher.com. Best of all it freezes! I got a whole load of it and keep it in the freezer. When you deal with Mrs. Robens they are soooo nice. You put in all your allergies and they only show you the products you are able to eat. On all their mixes they give tons of substitution alternatives and they even have a help line (which is what I called when I got the recommendation). As Hoyt is allergic to soy, dairy, and corn, margarine is tough - this is tasty and easy! Good luck! Giselle
Guest
Thanks. Giselle, how do you find this margarine on kosher.com? I can't find it. I'll take a look at other butters today & see what I can find. Carolyn
Giselle
Oh my gosh - I went over there and put Mother's in the search space and nothing came up! I am horrified! I emailed them to see what the scoop is. If they don't carry it we will both have to find a different source. I have to order some things from allergygrocer.com (Mrs. Robens) and will ask them also! Sorry but I just ordered tons in late December and haven't ordered any since so didn't realize - will keep you posted. Giselle
Guest
Has anyone tried Ghee or Coconut Oil (Butter) for a substitution of butter? Does it work well atleast in receipes? Here's the site for Ghee My acupuncturist suggested Ghee. It says it's Lactose & Casein free, but not dairy free. Do you guys think this would this be something that's usually tolerated with a dairy allergy? Carolyn
Chemar
Carolyn, I dont know whether ghee is tolerated in people who have dairy allergy, but I do know one can purchase it at Wholefoods Supermarkets It is clarified butter, and is excellent for cooking as it doesnt burn like butter does. Has a great taste too It is quite a bit more expensive than regular butter tho, and so you may want to look into making it yourself from unsalted butter. It is basically unsalted butter that is brought to boiling point and then simmered till all the milk solids settle out in the bottom. The top "butter oil" is then gently skimmed off and that is what is used as ghee.
Claire
Hi Carolyn, It could be the soy (yes, allergic cravings), or it could be the salt. I know that I just craved highly buttered popcorn, and finally accepted that I couldn't keep it in the house. [i should note that I would never eat (or want) more than a bag of microwave popcorn in a day, but it was messing up my quest to lose 3 pounds.] Now when I get that craving, I suck on the peanuts that are roasted and salted in their shells--while they are still in their shells (I can't remember if you are allergic to peanuts). Then I open them and eat the peanut. This worked at the movie theatre recently without any problem. In my case, I think the butter (on the popcorn) was my only real source of concentrated salt. My point is that I wasn't getting enough salt in my system and needed it. If you have other salty foods, then maybe it isn't your issue. We used to use Earth Balance butter, but my son's doctor said the soy is bad for the adrenals. I hope you find a good solution! Best, Claire
Guest
Hi Claire, Now after thinking about it Earth Balance butter does have quite a salty taste to it. I rarely salt food so other than baked items that may have salt as an ingredient, the butter is my only salt source. Carolyn
Guest
Giselle, I asked the Miss Roben's company about the margarine from Mothers. They said it is only available seasonally starting a couple weeks before Easter. Carolyn
Guest
Giselle, By the way I posted over at the Chelatingkids forum to see if anyone knew of a current source for the mothers margarine and got a reply for this link: http://www.mykoshermarket.com However, the Mother's Margarine contains artificial flavor. I take it that doesn't bother your son? Carolyn
Giselle
Hi there, just back from Rhode Island visiting my husband who is shooting a movie for Disney called "Underdog"! Boy was it fun! Although the plane was a nightmare and caused instant tics. It must be all the chemicals they use for cleaning and the fact the air doesn't circulate. The plane trip back was actually going O.K. until they sprayed n "air freshener" which even bothered ME! Hoyt smelled it and almost instantly started ticcing. The margarine in question is only available for a few weeks before passover! What a shame. I'm glad I stocked up! It's freezable. The passover margarine doesn't contain the flavoring and he does well with it. I only use it for baking a gluten free, soy free, dairy free chocolate chip cookie recipe or these wonderful pumpkin muffins so even when he has those he doesn't get too many at one time. When it is next available I'll post. Sorry about getting any hopes up! Giselle
Guest
Giselle, Check this link out as it says it's the Mothers Margaine Sticks-Salted (Passover). However in the ingredients it lists artifical flavor. Is this the same one as yours? http://www.mykoshermarket.com/detail.aspx?ID=14941 Carolyn
