SSS Posted January 26, 2012 Report Posted January 26, 2012 Can someone please explain how someone is born with Lyme? *I will give it a shot. This is from the famous Dr. J., whom I read has treated over 5,000 children, collected much data. If the Mother has Lyme, and/or co-infections, and has never been treated, there is a 50% chance the Mother can pass it to the baby in utero. It is also a scientific fact the spirochetes can pass through with breastfeeding. I watched a DVD recently with a panel of Lyme Dr.'s not including Dr. J., and they said the chances are 40% of passing in utero, but untreated while breastfeeding increases the chances. If the Mother knows she has Lyme, but takes antibiotics while pregnant and breastfeeding, the percentages and chance of passing go down. It is also possible to collect the blood from the cord of the baby and send that in for testing.
momcap Posted January 26, 2012 Report Posted January 26, 2012 If you go to Dr. Jones' webpage, he has a whole section on pregnancy and lyme. http://sites.google.com/site/drjoneskids/home
SSS Posted January 26, 2012 Report Posted January 26, 2012 Forgot to add: One of the LLMD's who was on the DVD I was watching has been treating Lyme since 1988. She said in that time, she has had 10 women patients get pregnant- she put them all on antibiotics while pregnant, and of the 10 treated while pregnant women, only 1 had passed on Lyme to the baby.
