Iowadawn Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 Well, it was only a matter of time. I caught a story from today wgrz news that Mechtler has recommended the students go to a "world renowned expert in tic disorders in Rochester." That's Kurlan or Singer? Oh brother. Dawn
Iowadawn Posted January 25, 2012 Author Report Posted January 25, 2012 Also, have you noticed that the diagnosis is continually & subtly "morphing" in the media as the heat goes up. Mass hysteria to conversion disorder and now a more "palatable" one of mass psychogenic illness. I saw a quote by Mechtler today saying the girls aren't experiencing mass hysteria---What?!! Dawn

Dawn Kurlan left Rochester a few years ago... and Singer was not there (I don't think). Unfortunately Kurlan left behind an ample supply of folks who believe PANDAS is just a result of some stress to the body increasing tics in kids who already have a tic disorder... no reason to test for infection or treat other than standard OCD or tic treatments. This is very sad, since Kurlan is now apparently embracing (? saving face by pretending he discovered?) the idea that infection can trigger these symptoms and saying "well... I didn't question if infection could trigger it.. .i just said it couldn't be only strep that did it". I suspect the expert will be Michael E. Pichichero, from the Elmwood group in Rochester. He has written on both sides of the PANDAS controversy, but of late has leaned toward the "infection is just another form of stress" idea. Edited January 25, 2012 by kimballot

He's a tic guy. http://www.urmc.rochester.edu/people/?u=23513877 (I think Pichichero is an infectious dz guy.) Mink is a major PANDAS Naysayer, so I'm positive he would back up Mechtler's Conversion Disorder diagnosis. I'm sure Mechtler knows that and that is probably why Mechtler recommends him, to save face. After all, if a "world renowned expert" agrees with his diagnosis, Mechtler is off the hook, so to speak. I'm sure the guy is starting to get a little worried. He's not looking too good in the eyes of the families and much of the public at this point. Edited January 25, 2012 by EAMom
kim Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 I'm wondering if the cases are going to start coming out of the woodwork. I wouldn't want to be the "TS expert," who tries to fit the symptoms that these kids are experiencing into what has been foisted off on the rest of us. It's no more diagnostic in the vast majority of cases, than "autism." I just pray that something really useful can come out of this horrible situation, like everyone has to put their egos and pet diagnoses aside and come together to get some real answers no matter how ugly they might be.
