Momto2 Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 We don't know if my daughter has Pandas or not, we are just starting to explore that. After seeing her ped. on Friday, she did put her on antibiotics while we wait to get the results of her titres. I just found out that there is another case of strep in her classroom! (Her best friend had it in December and a couple weeks later the OCD started.) Will she be resistant to that since she is on abx? Or do I need to worry that this could complicate her situation? Also, how long does it take to see improvement with the abx if it is indeed Pandas? Thanks. Amy
chase23 Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 well I am new to this, but in my oppinion I would not send your daughter to school at this early stage of Pandas, it could complicate things. If it were me I would keep her home for a few days until the strep has run its course. just because she is on an antibiotic does not mean its one that will protect her from all streps. My daughter was actually on amoxicilan 2 years ago when her pandas symptoms started. it was either too low of a dose to get rid of it, or she had a strep strain that was resistant to amox. So that takes me to your next question. You might see results from the antibiotic immediately (24) hours or it might take a few days. But don't give up if youdon't see results. We did not see the tics and other symptoms disappear until she started zithro. that was our wonder drug. what i'm saying is that just because your daughter does not respond to this antibiotic does not clear her from pandas. if you don't see any change in a few days, see if your pediatrician will up the dose of the current one, or try a whole new one like zithromax or augmentin. i dont't think many pediatricians offer high dose antibiotics initially. It seems like most pandas kids need something other thank low does antibiotics to see a result
3boysmom Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 Wow, impressive response for a "newbie". Ditto what chase23 said.
WorriedDADNMOM Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 I would add Amox did "clear" skin strep----Impetigo In our dd5 at the time but I still thought for the last 2 years something was still up. Same DD6 developed tics after asymptomatic strep (confirmed titer) Amox did nothing for the tic but Peniclillin did take care of tic. Then high temp for one week with flu later in spring confirmed chronic infection when dd was much better after high temp. Then re-affirmed my suspicions with amox after oldest dd8 developed severe anxiety and separation anxiety 3-4 weeks post abx. So two dd's with neuro-psych issues post strep and abx(amox) with not so swift results. Don't give up and keep pressing if you have a ped on board. If not, dump em and go DAN or Integrative Ped or someone that knows Pandas. Hope this helps!!!
chase23 Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 Maybe I'm actually starting to get this stuff! A few months ago i would have sworn this was all Latin! haaaaaa Wow, impressive response for a "newbie". Ditto what chase23 said.

Parents send their kids to school after 1-2 doses of antibiotic. If I were to keep my child home for every strep in the classroom, she would never get to school (And there are many many Pandas cases too; mild to moderate ones.)
