bulldog24 Posted January 9, 2012 Report Posted January 9, 2012 My son has pandas, and we just got home from our 2nd nih visit! And ivig! I just cant take much more. I am actually taking the dog to the vet in an hour. I am going to have them culture her too. Idk. I read they can carry strep from reverse zoonosis gonna get her doggie augmentin (clavamox) $$$$$$ I mean what are the chances of all of this! I am about to blow up my house and luve in a bubble. I see my doc (id) and hopefully he can suggest something. I am about to hire some epidemiologist or something. Strep is going down, it cant win.
bigmighty Posted January 9, 2012 Report Posted January 9, 2012 Please let me be misreading this. Are you saying that you think your DS has strep right now? Oh, no.
dcmom Posted January 9, 2012 Report Posted January 9, 2012 WAIT! I hear it is more sensible to just go ahead and treat the dog, than to go through the expense of testing....
bigmighty Posted January 9, 2012 Report Posted January 9, 2012 So, what happened? Did the lab test from the throat culture they took during the NIH physical pop positive? How is you son feeling? Does he seem to be doing okay?
bigmighty Posted January 9, 2012 Report Posted January 9, 2012 Sorry - missed the subtitle that said your DD has strep. I thought it was your DS. So sorry. I hope you get things back to normal soon.
3boysmom Posted January 9, 2012 Report Posted January 9, 2012 Dr L had us treat our dog. She asked us to have the vet use a shot of bysilin. ( phonetically spelled!).
socalmom Posted January 9, 2012 Report Posted January 9, 2012 (edited) reverse zoonosis is where humans give it to dogs - right? That is what DR T. told me as well.......... Edited January 9, 2012 by socalmom
tpotter Posted January 9, 2012 Report Posted January 9, 2012 Dr L had us treat our dog. She asked us to have the vet use a shot of bysilin. ( phonetically spelled!). Yes...it's much cheaper just to shoot the dog full of bicillin or some other kind of abx than blow up your house. No, seriously, Dr. L. also had us treat the dog (no culture needed). And, we've done it more than once. Believe it or not, our vet gets this whole autoimmune thing better than most of our doctors do. We have a ton of strep going through the house right now (DS and I were very, sick for 2 months, and he's still trying to get over it,) the dog wasn't acting well, and I brought him in. His lymph nodes were enlarged (the vet showed me how to feel for it.) He took out that needle, and just shot him full of bicillin, and then sent home with 10 days of oral abx. Many of us have been living with this for many years, and I have to say that reading all this out loud (about the dog, blowing up the house and living in a bubble) gave us all a good laugh (in sort of a bad way.) But, I know it's horribly frustrating.
bulldog24 Posted January 9, 2012 Author Report Posted January 9, 2012 You are all right as usual. It would cost $400 to do the culture. They cant get it unless she is sedated. I cant afford it and so I am going to have to just treat. The dog has skin infections too so they were going to put her on keflex. Do you think this is good enough? I actually have bicillin that I use for my Lyme, But I dont think its the smae. I have bicillin LA and I think the vet uses CR. Anyone have a dose? I used to be a tech. You think I would have a clue.

We've used keflex before. It's probably fine, but if you really want to be sure, maybe call the NIMH and ask them what they think. I definitely think it helped that we also did followup oral abx for 10 days.
airial95 Posted January 10, 2012 Report Posted January 10, 2012 Our son had T&A in november, has been recovering beautifull (as long as he stayed on the Augmentin). Finished the abx last Monday - tested postive yesterday for strep. I feel your frustration!!! We've all cultrured everytime one of the kids pop for strep - but we're finally pulling the trigger and going for full blood work on Mommy and Daddy. Our vet understands this stuff fairly well too. She opted against culturing the dogs for the reason that they have to be sedated (mine are doggie-AARP eligible - so not something you want to do if not needed). And she just treated. I don't remember which abx she treated with (clavamox sounds familiar though), but it was one of the ones that were free at Publix - so other than the vet appointment (which my dogs were due for anyway!) it wasn't that $$$ for us.
EAMom Posted January 10, 2012 Report Posted January 10, 2012 Hi Bulldog24, Ha ha, don't blow up your house. I sent you a pm.

EAMom Posted January 10, 2012 Report Posted January 10, 2012 What antibiotic was your son on when he got strep? And what dose and frequency? Did you throat culture other family members?
