Hi All,

I have not posted in a while but have stopped in from time to time. It sounds like much progress was made over the holidays. I hope everyone had a great holiday season and I am hopeful that 2006 will be a great year.

We are off to a slow start. My little one has developed the cough tic and we are trying to combat this. It is difficult since we are having construction done to the basement and the mold is kicking up. Oddly enough the tic started the night that construction was first started. Besides providing more ventalation, are there any thoughts?

Anyway, I hope all continue to do well and a special hello to Chemar and Allison.

Be Well;

Marie

Hello, Marie

We are new to this forum... My son (now 12, but diagnosed with mild TS in '99) recently had a turn for the worse starting a few weeks ago (showing much more complex tics and OCD behavior). My wife and I are still playing detective about the cause for the sudden change (poor diet, stress/excitement from the holidays, strep?), but we are pretty convinced that the air in our house wasn't helping (lots of holiday pot pourri/scented candles, lots of firewood burning, Christmas tree, my son's excessive (!) use of Axe body spray) .

So, we got a few portable HEPA air purifiers, which seemed to help him alot -- at a minimum, he said it's easier for him to sleep now in his room. (Btw, I did some reserach on the air purifiers first and I'd suggest avoiding the "ionizers" out there, as consumer reports question their effectiveness compared to HEPA purifiers.)

Just my 2 cents! Good luck with the renovations!

Hi Marie :) and Happy New Year to you too!

I do agree with the suggestion on the HEPA filter air purifier (and also agree re NOT using the ionization systems---which actually increased my son's tics when we tried one!)

Mold is not only a very BIG tic trigger, but it is also very dangerous to overall health. I know many healthcare professionals feel it is even advisable to move out while doing any renovation work as these particles and mold etc are so detrimental to health.

Hi Maire - so nice to hear from you. Sorry things are not 100% at your end. As you know...this will pass. I agree on the Hepa Filter - we have one running in our son's room most of the time. We found over the holidays our son had a snuffle - tic like only in that it was regular - and I do wonder if it was the Christmas tree after reading about other's having a reaction to the tree - it started around the time we brought in the tree - it would also explain why he had a reaction at the cottage last year with allergies - lots of trees there. Only time will tell. He also has had a cold - and so it may just be an irritation - overall though he is doing really well. No one else would see it as a tic and he has not had any other tics. I can live with a sniff that is probably just due to a cold - what a long way we have come.

I hope the renovation is a fun one - where you are updating, getting more space etc. and not the boring money sucking - drying out the basement kind! As always, looking forward to your updates. Happy New Year!
