Liebchen Posted December 8, 2005 Report Posted December 8, 2005 Has anyone tried therapy with a chiropractic neurologist? My regular chiro is recommending treatment with a fellow who specializes in this. They tout good results. My ex is completely skeptical (I'm an openminded skeptic). I'm willing to try something that might reduce symptoms for my daughter (6) and increase her ability to focus.
Chemar Posted December 8, 2005 Report Posted December 8, 2005 Hi my son regularly sees a NUCCA chiropractor ( http://www.nucca.org )and finds it very beneficial. By realligning the vertebrae, it seems to also help to diminish his tics. He sees an acupuncture/reflexology therapist who is on the same Integrative team, and the combined benefits of both on his tics, heneral health & wellbeing are truly remarkable
evie Posted December 25, 2005 Report Posted December 25, 2005 We actually just flew down to Fort Lauderdale to see an acupunturist/chiropracter (among many other titles that this Doctor has). He claims he has treated many children with PANDAS / tourettes with positive results. Just sitting in the waiting room has given me reassurance about him - his patients swear by him and he has supposedly helped many people with all different types of ailments - (from asthma to crohns/colitis to muscular dystrophy...etc.) He looks at PANDAS as purely a nuerological disorder - he doesn't even treat the 'strep' aspect of it - interestingly, he was concerned about the high EOS count my son had, and not the Dnase and ASO count (which are through the roof!) He said that most kids that he treated with this disorder had a high EOS (eosinophils) - allergy related. We went cold turkey on the antibiotics that my son was taking to keep his tics under control so that we can see if the treatment worked. We have not yet seen positive results, but are holding our breath. If anyone would like info on this Doctor - feel free to contact me. Even if he does't help my son, there are many others that he has helped...You never know...
Chemar Posted December 26, 2005 Report Posted December 26, 2005 Hi Evie the chiro does sound very interesting. Do post back with your son's results to this treatment. I was a little concerned tho re what you said about his attitude about PANDAS..........treating the neurological aspect of it is good.........but ignoring the infection by the strep seems a bit odd to me! Strep is a very dangerous pathogen, and nomatter the additional good therapy used for its side effects like with PANDAS, still, IMHO, one should ALWAYS attempt to eradicate a pathogen from the body, especially of a child.
evie Posted December 26, 2005 Report Posted December 26, 2005 Just an update. We began treatment last Monday. We were told we'd see results in 48 hours. Wednesday morning my son woke up tic free for the first time in weeks. He remained that way through Thursday afternoon. On the flight home (Thursday) we began noticing an increase in the tics which has steadily worsened over the weekend. I called the doctors office today to see what may have happened. It seems my son has had a 'reversal' which means that whatever was aligned last week has misaligned somehow. The doctor said that when he felt him on Thursday before we left, he was properly aligned. He said we should go back onto the antibiotics and come back in a month. He originally said we would have to come back 4 times a year to keep him properly aligned. We were planning to go back in March / April. I was skeptical to begin with, but now I am just confused. I'm not really that familiar with acupuncture, but I was willing to give it a try, just to get my son off of his antibiotics. He's been on a combination of Zithromax and Keflex for about 6 months now an his stomach is a mess from all of it. When he's on the medication his tics are under control as well as his behavior - as soon as we try to wean him off of it, we see the tics returning and he becomes very irritable and impossible to deal with. He doesn't have any active strep infection - his titers are just SUPER high, and are not going down. It seems that the antibiotics were controling the tics and behavior somehow. I so badly wanted to get him off of the medicine that I jumped at this chance to treat him with acupuncture, stopped my life, took off to Florida, took off from work...etc. Now the doctor is telling me to come back again and I'm not sure what to do. I do have faith in him - he has helped many people successfully... I'd love to hear some of your opinions - anyone else have experience with acupuncture/chiropracters? Thanks!
Chemar Posted December 27, 2005 Report Posted December 27, 2005 both acupuncture and chiropracty have been very helpful for my son. Evie, I am puzzled as to why you need to fly to Florida for the treatment? are there no NUCCA chiros or qualified acupuncturists where you are? Also. PANDAS induced tics do not need to have an "active" strep infection to flare up....it is the presence of strep in the system that is the problem
evie Posted December 27, 2005 Report Posted December 27, 2005 We flew down because we heard amazing things about this guy. I'm sure if did some research I would find some qualified doctors locally. I took the chance because of this doctor's reputation. As far as the presence of strep in the system - any ideas on how the cleanse him of this? It's been about six months of him being on many different antibiotics (Zithromax + Keflex being the most effective) - and we still can't knock it out of him. The medication does kind of keep things at bay, though. (We're giving him Culturelle and Florastor as well.) It controls the tics and behavior - but as soon as we try to get him off of it - the symptoms return, and his bloodwork recently came back with higher counts than before we began treating him. I really have no idea which direction to go in - that's why I decided to try this route - we heard such positive feedback about this doctor.
Chemar Posted December 27, 2005 Report Posted December 27, 2005 evie i have bumped up Ronnas PANDAS thread for you.........
evie Posted December 27, 2005 Report Posted December 27, 2005 I just skimmed through it - I couldn't get the link to work to view the old forum and the additional info that Ronna posted there. I didn't really come across anything new in this post..I think I must have read it about six months ago when I first came across this forum - (which is such a great support - thanks everyone !) So if anyone has any ideas as far as how to cleanse my son of his persistent and stubborn strep (no positive cultures, though) - please inform!! Thanks!

mom2ts Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Can I get the name of the doctor in Ft. Lauderdale? I would like our chiropractor to see if he could talk to him.
