JGsmom Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 DS 12.5 newlt dx'd w/ GI Lyme ( strong possibility) having stomach pain and general ill feeling on his 3 new abx started all at once: Zith 250 twice daily, omnicef 300mg once daily and Tindamax 125mg twice daily on w/e. He is only getting the zith once per day as he can not tolerate twice. He also gets one Theralac twice daily, one S. Boulardii twice daily and 3 Culturelle twice daily. That's it--any suggesions? Dr. J feels that detox for kids is unnecessary--but I feel my child needs help. Thank you. Terry
momaine Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 (edited) My own LLMD recommends Glutathione for detox as well as either activated charcoal or ...the clay...i can't think of what's its called off the top of my head. I've had good luck with Glutathione for my dd. PS, she doesn't have gastrointestinal lyme though. Edited July 31, 2011 by momaine

LNN Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 T, My kids take glutathione every morning - best on an empty stomach for absorption but given DS-G's gut issues, I wouldn't stress about that. Go ahead and take with food. Ok to give with abx. But glutathione is more for brain detox than gut detox. You can use activated charcoal (my DS has taken 1200mg at noon - away from abx and probiotics - is about to switch to lots of chlorella for KPU). Or PM Wendy for bentonite clay info. Like charcoal, clay is a sponge and needs to be taken away from abx - but chlorella does not). Would DS-G eat a few saltines before getting out of bed in a.m.? My DD's worst problems are dyspepsia first thing in the morning. GI doc told us to give pepcid at night since it wears off in about 18 hrs and he wanted it working first thing in the a.m. It does help, but her GERD isn't as bad as it is in your house. Two things that have helped DD are Theralac TruFlora (2 weeks every day to kill yeast and then 2x/wk as preventive) and daily BMs. The less full her bowels, the better her GERD seems to be. I'm sure a doctor would roll his/her eyes, but it seems related. Thinking of you - hope there's relief soon! Laura
tpotter Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 We use glutamine, but be careful. DS18 is doing extremely well on it. DS15 ended up in the ER on Thursday a.m. (luckily DH hadn't left for work yet, when I got the call...I had to race home.) We don't know if it was from all the glutamine and/or the coconut oil and/or the herbal we had started him on (probably a combination of all the above), but he suddenly couldn't breathe, and was having chest pains. I googled all of them, and they were all at risk. Decided to pull him off all of the above. I'm not saying not to take it, just saying...start slowly with anything new, and build up (we started with to much at once, I believe + I suspect there may have been some herxing. Glutamine can cause reflux. BTW, if your DS is having stomach pain, I would definitely check for c-diff (especially being on all the abx), h-pylori and giardia. Our gastro did NOT recommend these, and DS18 ended up losing about 20 - 25 lbs (and he as thin to start with) before someone on the forum suggested I ask about it. He was positive for C-diff, and now we have to be super careful, because he's at high risk for it coming back (took 3 rounds of abx to get rid of it!)

DS has been checked for H.Pylori and just recently started his abx ( 2 weeks ago) and had probiotics from the beginning, so c-diff would be unlikely. However, he has not been tested gor Giardia and that's a very good idea, thank you. I will not start him on anything new yet as we are still struggling with the abx regimen. Again, tonight, I decided to not give him his tindamax, as he did get one full day of it and to give him a break as he is white as a ghost, huffing and puffing as he walks from room to room and has no stamina on the abx. Thank you so much for your input.

But I can try to give the glutatione with abx--he refuses to take anything new that he doesn't have to. Funny enough, the last 2 nights when he felt badly, he asked for ice cream, which he said made him feel better?? So, I told him he could have ice cream every night if he thinks that will make him feel better. Needless to say I saw a smile for the first time in a few days. if that's what it takes.... We are taking plain theralac daily, but I think I will drop it down to once a day instead of twice a day. Enjoy your vacation--thanks for writing. Terry
momaine Posted August 1, 2011 Report Posted August 1, 2011 Dd takes 500mg of Glutathione in the a.m. She takes it with food and all her other meds/supplements. I hadn't heard about taking it on an empty stomach. When she takes Activated Charcoal, she takes ten capsules at least 2 hours away from all drugs.

sf_mom Posted August 1, 2011 Report Posted August 1, 2011 The huffing and puffing might point toward the co-infection of Babesia and would speak to Dr. J about this particular symptom. We have one son that comes up serologically negative for everything when doing antibody testing except for ASO strep titers. Now that his ASO is in normal range he is showing some anti-DNase-B titers that are also in normal range. We only found lyme when we tested via his urine and got a DNA match. His brother is positive for Bartonella and Babesia via antibody testing. Its congenital Lyme for our family so an indication all the children are infected similarly. This particular son is doing extremely well with treatment but had a dry unproductive cough from Jan. to May after an antibiotic rotation that resolved in June. We felt we where getting close to rotating down and off antibiotics but were concerned of the possibility of him still having Babesia due to brother's diagnoses. We had him tested via ART by skilled LLMD that has successfully treated many. He came back positive for Babesia immediately and recently rotated towards treating the co-infection. It has been nothing short of a dynamic shift for him since rotation. The coughing is back with serious jags of trying to get something up and out. Anyway I sight our story because he was negative via bloodwork for Babesia. The only indication he had of Babesia was the dry unproductive cough that resulted from a herx. A dry unproductive cough can also be Bartonella. In June he was ranging in the 98% recovered range from all symptoms of LD. Lets just say....... I am grateful to every Dr. that has contributed to our son treatment as we work towards full recovery. Sometimes it is just that 1 symptom that might indicate a co-infection and would talk to your LLMD. Air hunger is very specific to Babesia. -Wendy
