bulldog24 Posted July 8, 2011 Report Posted July 8, 2011 hello. My daughter is not a PANDAS patient. but she gets strep about every 6-8 weeks. We see an ENT in 2 weeks. i assume that the only solution is having surgery. My son who is 5 has PANDAS (well, we are waiting for a diagnosis, but its obvious) so this is an important step. The problem is that I would like the surgery before school starts end of aug, but i am expecting a baby prob beginning of aug. I am curious how long my daughter would be in the hospital? I am the main medical decision maker, and I do not trust any medical professionals. I will want to make sure she is taken care of properly in the hospital, but I also want to be with my newborn I am sure. I also cant be laying on a chair this pregnant overnight. So I am confused. My hubby certainly could stay with her, but he has no idea about medical stuff. I am afraid honestly. So can anyone tell me about the surgery and recovery? thanks
JAG10 Posted July 8, 2011 Report Posted July 8, 2011 My dd7 had her tonsils out last September. She came home the same day. She was actually pretty good for several days, the more intense pain came after the scabs formed. My doc had me keep her on Tylenol with codeine for a complete week, then as needed. She had no complications and went back to school a week later taking Tylenol (straight) as needed.
thereishope Posted July 8, 2011 Report Posted July 8, 2011 My son had t and a when he was 5. We got there early in the morning and out by afternoon. As long as she drinks something after she wakes up, she's good to go. I was told to let him eat what he wants. The more you baby the throat, the thicker the scab and the more pain. My son ate chicken nuggets the same night.I don't think my son ever took more the regular Tylenol.
beeskneesmommy Posted July 9, 2011 Report Posted July 9, 2011 My son was 3, almost 4. It was an o/p T & A procedure and he was home within hours. The 1st 2-3 days were tough w/ lots of pain and poor sleeping at night, then he seemed better. But at the 1 wk. mark he had a couple more rough days which I have heard is common. He took the pain meds that they gave him for 3 days then I nixed it and replaced with Tylenol. These are his physical symptoms, minus the total upheaval of PANDAS symptoms (since your daughter is not a PANDAS diagnosed kiddo).
PhillyPA Posted July 9, 2011 Report Posted July 9, 2011 My 7 year old son just had his tonsils out on June 27. He was the first surgery of the day and we were out by noon.I requested that he receive IV antibiotics during the surgery and he also took augmentin after the surgery. I didn't want any infections. We gave him the tylenol with codine every three hours. He did really well. He ate solids right away. He slept through the night every night. He even had a friend over the second day after surgery for a couple of hours and they played video games. I believe the key is to keep up with the pain medicine every three hours for a full week ( except at night when asleep). I let him sleep with me for the whole week after surgery and he loved it. It really was very very easy for him and for us. It only took a week to recover. The following week he went to chess camp and was fine. No more medicine needed.
MichaelTampa Posted July 9, 2011 Report Posted July 9, 2011 Removing is not quite the only approach. Another approach is regenerative cryotherapy, where they are frozen off and regrow. It may not be available in US, the link below is from Germany. http://www.kryopraxis.de/
