We had a 2nd opinion with an MD in NJ...his thought was that my dd7 is immune compromised along with PANDAS and is doing some coinfection testing. So he decreased her to Augmentin 250mg one time a day and had me put her on Motrin 24/7 instead of steroids. Long story short...my mother needed emergent open heart surgery, so unfortunately, I have been a little neglectful with meds. She has been on the Motrin but not 24/7 and not the abx. She was exposed to strep over the weekend and had a VERY mild flare. And now has a fever and a sore throat ( I am taking her in tomorrow, but this is how she presents with strep). Her exacerbation is the mildest it has ever been, even on her really goods days of no exacerbation. Does this mean she is healing? I really am not sure the next step. I have been trying to get a hold of the MD for a couple of weeks with no response at all. Any thoughts?

Well, I think it's great news! Not that she could have strep, but that a possible reaction is mild. It could be a few reasons. Maybe being that she was/is on some antibiotic could have helped keep it mild, maybe you're catching it really soon into the infection. Also, and just to be honest, you may still see a worsening of symptoms in the future. If you don't see a flare in a couple days, then you may have dodged a bullet. Yes, take her to the doc, remind the doc she has been on some antibiotics so she could get a false negative, then get all other family members checked.

Well, I hope its wonderful news...

I'd be holding my breath though, because my child is always very calm when she has a fever, which doesn't happen very often, but after the fever is gone all h3ll breaks loose!

But wouldn't it be amazing if your child has strep w/ very little PANDAS symptoms? I pray its so!

That is great news! We just recently had another strep infection, and flare was also more mild. We had two new tics (both mild facial tics) and the OCD presented a bit differently (a bit more classic) - but everything was more mild. The tantrums were more frequent, but not increased in severity, and we had VERY LITTLE violence - which is usually our worst symptom.

Like you, I don't know if it was the prolonged treatment previously or the therapy we were doing, but I'll take the progress any way I can get it!!

We weren't on abx at the time of our infection either. But what might have helped in your case was the constant dosing of Motrin - that may have kept the inflammation at bay enough to mute the symptoms of the flare.
