AmySLP Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 My daughter was switched to Zithromax (from Augmentin that she was doing ok on due to PANDAS) b/c she had reactive bands on the Lyme testing. HEr PANDAS symptoms are ramping up, with old behaviors returning that we havn't seen in 2 yrs. Is Zithromax better for Lyme in this waiting stage compared to Augmentin. It's hard to watch her backslide in the meantime. LAst night in a panic I gave Augmentin ES instead of Zithromax. CAn't get Dr. B until Monday-What would you do for the weekend? In the past Zithromax never took care of her PANDAS symptoms 100% and that's how we ended up on Ammox/Augmentin for nearly a year now. Thanks, Amy Hoping to get the Igenex sent back by TUes, as I got the kits in the mail yesterday.

I have done something similar and told Dr. B about it later and he was fine with the fact that I used my experience to make a decision that would help my dd. I am not positive, but I'm pretty sure that I've read that Augmentin or Ammox is better than Zith for Lyme. My dd, who has Lyme, could never get off Augmentin when she was only diagnosed PANDAS. I have a story to relate to you that you might find interesting. I started 100mg of doxy bid two weeks ago for Lyme. After two weeks I was supposed to get an increase in dose to 200mg bid but the doctor was out till Monday when I called on Thursday. Being the impatient person that I am, I decided to take Augmentin from another family members old prescription (I know, bad) to see if it did anything. I was planning to take 3 days worth and see if there was a herx. 12 hours after the first dose, I woke in pain. EVERY joint and muscle in my body hurt and after a second dose, I continued to get worse all day. I didn't take anymore. I just took two Aleve and went to bed. BUT, Today, I woke and I walked down the stairs putting one foot in front of the other and only hanging on the railing for the first time in a year and a half. Because of the pain in my heels, I usually hang on the railing with my right hand, push against the wall with my left hand to take some weight off my feet, and take baby steps, one step at a time, down the stairs, in excruciating pain. Once I get moving, it isn't as bad. My head feels clearer too. Like the feeling of having stuffing around my eyes is lessened. Yay for Augmentin!

Zith and Augmentin are both used to treat Lyme but need to be in combo to be really effective so I would do both the antibiotics.Infact we did both of these AND Bactrim for DS 8 then, now 9. Dr Jones's RX for DS. Augmentin ES bid, zith 100 bid and bactrim 125 bid. Just high dose probiotics needed. Jodie
laure Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 Amy, This sounds like it could be a herx. Dr. B did same for us (switched to Augmentin from zith), and we had major very scary herxing, return to old behaviors within 12 hours! In the end Dr. B added the zith back in along with the Augmentin. She was a new person inside of 3 days. I would take both for the weekend, and then call them first thing Monday. My guess is he would do that anyway.
AmySLP Posted April 16, 2011 Author Report Posted April 16, 2011 Thanks to all for your quick responses- I need to dose her now with something-held off for your opionions. I'm going with another dose of Augmentin ES & then tonight i'll do a dose of Zithromax. SHe is taking diflucan for another week, so that's in the mix & I'm trying to fit in a probiotic somewhere in there too. In an attempt to get our mind off all this & have some fun, we are heading to a water park in the Poconos for the night. Can't stop thinking about how people write about chlorine affecting kids, but we had no problem with this last summer & she swam usually twice daily. MomMaine- I have to tell you-if you opened my kitchen cabinet where we keep all our meds & saw my ABX stash-it's crazy. B/c my kids have taken lots of ABX in liquid form with Rx's of 30 days, I have lots of unconstituted bottles, b/c then in the meantime the doctor may have changed to a different rx. I've learned to make sure I get all the bottle from the pharmacy with the original Rx. & then I bring the bottles in to get re-constituted. I switched pharamacies, when the last one insisted that they had to keep the unconstituted bottles until I returned each 6 or 10 days and then would not give me the remaining (that I or my insurance co. already paid for). Now I have all unused, unconstituted meds. & boxes of tablets from old prescriptions-saving all these for times like this. Thanks for your advice!
AmySLP Posted April 16, 2011 Author Report Posted April 16, 2011 Your herx symptoms indicate Bartonella. I know that this os one test Dr B did-I don't know what bands were reactive, but we do have 3 indoor cats. However, they were all rescues, so had been exposed to fleas &tics prior. COuld my kids get this from the cats?

Also cat and dog saliva has been demonstrated as liable in passing infection. We're very careful with the puppy and DS especially incase of an open scrape or paper cut and like.
sf_mom Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 I am sorry I meant my comments for Momaine and specific foot pain.
momaine Posted April 17, 2011 Report Posted April 17, 2011 Your herx symptoms indicate Bartonella. SF MOM, Thanks for pointing this out. I have read this too. (I tested negative for Bartonella but then again so did my dd and Dr. J still thinks she has it) One of our dr.'s said LD can also cause foot pain but everything I've read about foot pain seems to be connected to Bartonella. I am seeing an LLMD on Wednesday. I am pretty sure that Doxy treats both Lyme and Bartonella but we'll see what the LLMD thinks. Right now I'm on 100mg of Doxy that will likely be raised to 200mg BID starting tomorrow when the dr. is back in his office. I took 3 days worth of Augmentin (on my own) on top of the Doxy and the first day I HURT everywhere. Every joint and most muscles hurt by the end of the first 24 hours. The two days, however, I was able to walk down my stairs in the morning putting one foot in front of the other instead of hanging on both wall and railing and babystepping down the steps like I've had to do for over a year and a half. I was exstatic! But I have also been more exhausted than usual.
sf_mom Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 I am so glad you'll be seeing an LLMD. I have many clinical symptoms for Babesia but negative via Igenex and currently being treated. It was funny everything I was positive for they weren't too concerned about. It was what I wasn't positive for but had symptoms that worried about. Having an LLMD that understands the symptoms as it relates to infection is invaluable.

Thanks, Amy Hoping to get the Igenex sent back by TUes, as I got the kits in the mail yesterday. I know this is an old post, but Amy, do you remember how long it took for the backslide to begin after stopping the Augmentin for your daughter? Did you end up adding it back in? My daughter has been on both Azith and Augmentin and our LLMD has been wanting to stop the Augmentin for a long time. She's been doing very well on this combo. Her OCD is 95% better, anxiety is 80% better, some tics still hanging on though. I've resisted stopping Augmentin because all previous attempts to stop it did not go well. She began to backslide quickly (I can't remember what else she was on at the time though). Anyway, we decided to add Rifampin and stop the Augmentin. It's been 48 hours since her last dose and I'm waiting for all heck to break loose. Our doc seems to be nervous about having her on too much at once (I'm nervous too, but this is what's given her life back). She does have lyme and the doc thinks bartonella (based on symptoms). Does anyone have any wisdom to share? Thanks!
