Suzan Posted April 14, 2011 Report Posted April 14, 2011 What do you think about this? I got a call from dd9's teacher today. She was being so bad he actually had to leave the class to call me. She refused to be quiet and kept talking and laughing and being disrespectful and challenging. I could see it last night that she was on edge and her OCD was coming out. I immediately thought it was a strep reaction since the last time this happened at school there was a direct strep connection. I asked about strep and he said there is a boy in the class who had a sore throat and swollen tonsils this week but who never had a day off school for anything. I don't know any details about whether he was checked out for strep or not. When we get home, dd9 said her eyes vibrated (something that used to happen to her and I attribute to lyme but has not happened in months). She does not feel well at all. I want to keep her home from school tomorrow but I can't really afford to miss a day of work unless I really have to. How can I know if this is a lyme die off reaction or strep exposure?! I'm so upset, she was doing so well. Susan
ShaesMom Posted April 14, 2011 Report Posted April 14, 2011 Can't be of any help just wanted to send lots of hugs and prayers your way!!! I hope she wakes up tomorrow and all is well again. ME
mama2alex Posted April 14, 2011 Report Posted April 14, 2011 I'm so sorry to hear this is happening. Would it be worth getting a rapid strep/culture to check her? I would be suspicious of the strep exposure since this came out of nowhere, looks like a previous strep exposure, and someone in her class has the symptoms - it is strep season. You haven't changed her protocol lately have you? In that case, could it be a herx? Her behavior sounds like my son's yesterday - we got two emails and he was sent to the principal. Then he was really angry and cried at the drop of a hat last night. But I could clearly tie that to just having switched him to Cipro.

I did just increase her zithromax to every day rather than m-w-f but I don't think it's that since she has been on zith so long and at varying days/dosages. However I suppose it could be herxing from that. Regarding the rapid, she never would get a positive throat culture anyway in the past (at least not since she was very young) so I don't imagine it would show anything now on all these abx. She is afraid to go to school tomorrow. She says she can't recognize when she is acting this way so she can't plan ahead with some action to take. That's a very old behavior too, not being able to tell the difference in how she's acting. Sorry about your son too. I'm glad you can pin point it to the meds. That at least helps to just hang in there and work through it. Susan

Susan susan -- is the school/teacher supportive? could they have her doing something not with the mainstream class -- a special project or something -- not in a punitive way but in some other way that could keep her occupied but not in situaitons that she could be disruptive? good luck!
sf_mom Posted April 15, 2011 Report Posted April 15, 2011 As you know we've been struggling with new exposure/herx over the last couple of days. Sometimes its just deductive reasoning and sometimes there no clear cut answer. Older DS fever is gone but he is still having stomach issues this morning. We have no increase in prior symptoms... actually better. No one else in household came down with a fever and you would think the twins with their compromised immune systems would immediately get sick. I'm still waiting it out and will talk to the dr. next week about the whole issue. I'm learning towards herx. I always document days from the last rotation of antibiotics to see if there is a cycle. I do think the recent change in Azithro you would see an increase in symptoms. We see a lot of aggressive behavior from the twins when they herx: biting, kicking, screaming, rages, defiance behavior, opposing concepts, I'm mean, etc. I'd double up on detox to see if it helps. When we had a regression he truly added symptoms over time and each day he got just a little bit worse with no improvement in other areas. We experienced this when we forgot to give him his Azithro for over two weeks. By the end of the second week I KNEW SOMETHING WAS WRONG. It took use three weeks after restarting Azithro to climb back up to prior baseline. With a herx there is a lot of symptoms that are worse but there is typically one little thing that improves 'always unexpected symptom'. It feels very intuitive to me and almost hard to put a finger on. Hope that helps you sort it all out a little. -Wendy
sptcmom Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 Whether or not its a herx too, it sure sounds like strep exposure. From your psot it sounds like your DD is still pretty reactive to strep. It takes varying amount of time and depends on the kind of treatment that children start decreasing their reactivity as time and treatment proceeds. Holsitic plus allopathic treatemnt achieves the best lowering of autoimmunity/reactivity to exposures. I hope she is doing better.Again the little boy in her class sounds like could have triggered her off. Many working parents do send their borderline sore throat kids to school as we know and in my experience 90% of them have microbial related sore throat. Not all kids mount a fever and have full blown strpe as we know. After exposure I start DS on 500 mgs vitc bid, one capsule freeze dried garlic bid, increase detox and drainage, notatum quentans spray to nostrils and throat, mupirocin ointment in nose daily (last two I use as preventative daily anyways).Works every time including on neuro psych symptoms. I agree with Wendy's explanation of herx v/s exposure. After a true herx you will usually see an upwards/positive shift in baseline. On another note: Neuropsych symptoms like oppositional defiant behavior, over sensitive etc are a sign of Mold sensitivity/exposure and metal toxicity in our kids. Has your DD been on Nystatin or anityeast meds lately? Jodie
momaine Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 I'm sorry I can't keep track of who is who on this forum. I'm beginning to think its from Lyme brain and might get better though. But I wanted to ask. Is the the first time you've gone to daily Zith while also on other antibiotics for Lyme? If so, it could be a herx. Plus, lyme cycles and the most die off happens when its in its reproductive state, I think. Could it be a cycle of a worsening herx? Have you noticed a pattern of sorts? My dd is still stuggling ten weeks into lyme treatment. I keep hoping she'll come out the other side of this, but as the weeks drag on, its hard to keep thinking positive. I can't wait for our next visit with Dr. J. If for no other reason than to hear him say that she WILL get well.
sf_mom Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 Momaine: Its a long process and they do get better. We have seen herxs last a very long time, almost 4 months now for a cough that crop up from an antibiotic rotation (Dr. thinks due to Bartonella). Plus if you think of the hdIVIG as one big antibiotic. Truly flooding their symptoms and it takes an awfully long time for things to settle. As you know, that recovery varies from child to child after these hdIVIG treatments. I know the treatments are being recommended on a regular basis and I would truly hold out on another one until your child is trending better and minimally achieving prior baseline. AND perhaps not do another hdIVIG until treatment stalls. Trust your instincts on what is working for your children. -Wendy
