My dd9 has taken to running all around the house, whining like a baby, flapping her arms or wiggling around lying down, etc. She says she's hyper... (I agree...)

This is a new behavior for her. I know age regressive behavior and hyperactivity are PANDAS symptoms. Does this happen with Bartonella/Lyme, too?

Could this be herxing? Or could it be a negative reaction to medication?

My dd8 is biting, kicking and hitting at school and refusing to talk. She's grabbing things out of our hands and throwing temper tantrums. Our Neuro/lyme support doc said it's either herxing or candida dieoff reaction. I'm starting to chart it to see if I can see a pattern. He said to call back in 3 days if it's not calmed down to discuss further candida treatment. I don't know what he'd do, she's already on a bunch of stuff for yeast.

Hi Kara,

My ds4 just started Bactrim for suspected Bartonella. He's also being treated for Lyme and Pandas with Azithro. and Cefdinir. The day after starting Bactrim he started a motor tic. That stopped within 2 days but then his symptoms of hyperactivity really shot up, along with aggression, inability to focus, impulsivity and opposition. And yes, I've been told by Dr. J that those symptoms ADHD are classic Bartonella. Colin also started behaving more child-like too but he's young, so it's hard to say if that's just a passing phase unrelated to meds. The hyperactivity definately is related...at least for us.

hope that helps. has she gotten any better?

Thanksfor the re-assurance.

The hyperactivity does seem to have died down. We stopped the Bactrim since we have come to FLA for vacation. We've doubled up on the Zith in its place. Unfortunately, her OCD and emotional lability has increased. I've been contaminated since we got here on Friday. All the clothes we brought are contaminated, too. A few emotional breakdowns as well. I'm not sure if this is herxing or due to medication change. Either way, it sucks.

Kara,

I'm sooo sorry. I've been there. We changed meds, knowing nothing about herxing, right before Florida/disney trip! We almost didn't make it on the plane. Colin doesn't have OCD symptoms but major ADHD and aggression bursts which made for a not so relaxing vacation! We realized it was herxing after we got back and spoke to the doc. Hope it gets better for you guys.

If you are doing a Disney vaca., let me know, we were saved with the special "disability" passes we got.

PS - I'm with you. It totally sucks!

We are on the West Coast...no Disney for us right now.

We have not had IVIG. We discovered Bartonella as we were trying to unturn every stone before considering IVIG...

Her hyperactivity seems to be passed. So maybe it was a herx. Now, she just seems down all the time. Nothing can please her. Everything is a disappointment. If I didn't know PANDAS and Bartonella were at play, I'd think she was a spoiled brat. We bend over backward to do things she wants to do, etc., but she always finds things are boring, etc. She just had a birthday party yesterday and could only complain that her cousin (whose bday we also celebrated) got more than her (even though she really didn't)....My dd couldn't even enjoy what she got.

I hope this is a herx, too. I really don't think she's a spoiled brat. But man, she sure is acting like one, now. I feel bad for her and am angry at the same time.

Thanks for listening.

Kara,

If misery loves company, you can take comfort in the fact that DS is also going thru a negative phase. His has been more focused on losing games (lousy new england weather over spring break means we've been playing a lot of board games). His reactions are more like a three year old's than an 8 yo. yet, there have been times when he's been feeling really good where he takes losing in stride. So the moodiness seems to be related to other symptoms we're dealing with right now. He says it's like there's a voice inside that screams "you're a loser" if he loses and makes him feel very negative about himself. It's almost more related to a depression.

It's possible that your DD is feeling depressed/down on herself and irrationally tells herself "my cousin got more/better presents because everyone likes her better" or some similar negative self-worth thoughts. Nothing is good enough because she doesn't "deserve" things to be good enough. Sometimes, understanding that DS is already feeling low helps me bite my tongue or be sympathetic instead of screaming "you brat!" like I really want to (tho sometimes the frustration just gets to be too much to keep inside, unfortunately).

Hopefully getting back on bactrim when you get home will help. Have you been doing inositol? Has it helped any? Going to ask our LLMD about that and/or SAMe for my DD - the "sad for no reason" fairy sneaks up on her several times a week and I'm hoping to find a way to make her more unwelcome.
