MichaelTampa Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 I've been focusing a bit on the mold/dust/etc. issues in our home. I don't know that there's anything serious yet, but doing what we can. Just replaced living/dining room carpet with tile, was amazed at how much dirt was underneath the carpet. It could have filled a 5-gallon bucket! Anyway, brought me to the topic of old mattresses, they are probably collecting dirt or dust and who knows what else. Of course, a new one would normally bring with it lots of fun chemicals. Here is one idea, for making a mattress out of straw, that seems interesting to me. http://small-scale.net/yearofmud/2009/09/11/how-to-make-your-own-35-straw-mattress/
KeithandElizabeth Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 Michael: Let us know what you end up doing for a bed. We need to find a bed for our daughter and we have been looking at chemical free beds, but they are so expensive! Elizabeth
sptcmom Posted March 12, 2011 Report Posted March 12, 2011 We found organic crib mattress for a great sale and bought two for DS.Two large ones make a decent twin size bed on a wood platform bed, Bombay style. Its the crib mattreses that are reasonable and go on sale often. Ofcourse during dad's army stint in Bombay, the mattresses were plain old tapestry cloth pressure stuffed with just plain old cotton, no metals, nothing.Maybe Asian bazaars may have something similar. I know the Caribbean countries use those kind of simple mattresses.
