Wilma Jenks Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 she is up so late every night with OCD and racing thoughst. she is on: 8mg. lamictal Rilutek (small amount) 125mg. Inositol 6mg. melatonin 25mg. seroquel Pinch of Culturelle. I need 2 stop the OCD in the meantime, while finding out how to treat the possible PANDAS, and also look into the Lymes thing. What have you tried that worked?
susie Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 For my daughter it was the antibiotics that helped the most, specifically Augmentin. She's also on the inositol, but at a much higher dose of 3gm/day (was 6 gm/day). I'm not really sure it helped though.
Suzan Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 For us it was the three stage antibiotic approach to treating lyme. Zithromax only at a high enough dose helped too but not enough. In addition to the melatonin, we also use 5-htp and benadryl to calm in the evenings. Susan
LNN Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 Wilma, The amount of inositol you are giving is extremely low. In research studies, adults were given up to 18 grams (not milligrams), built up gradually over 6 weeks. So they may have started at 1 gram/day, given in 2 doses of 1/2 gram (or 500mg) each. Then after 5 days, gone up to 2.7 grams total, given in 3 doses of 700mg/each. So 125mg is small even for someone starting out. And most people won't see effects until 3-4 weeks of ramping up the dose. My son, at 45 pounds, was taking 5 grams/day when it seemed to start helping (or 5000 mg). To follow up on Chemar's post, even if it's determined that your child has infection-triggered OCD and does start antibiotic therapy, it would still be worthwhile to look into ERP therapy. Done correctly, it can make a big difference and gives coping tools that last a lifetime, even after any infection-based disease is treated.
cobbiemommy Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 Antibiotics, the only thing that has really worked (and time). Also, DS is taking Neurontin which I believe has some sedative effect. I know it is really hard right now, but hang in there. We made it to some semblance of calm and you will too! Cobbie
nicklemama Posted March 4, 2011 Report Posted March 4, 2011 Antibiotics decreased the ocd. High dose antibiotics. Wilma, 8mg of lamictal is a tiny drop. Its nowhere near a therapeutic dose. My 7yo, 55lb son takes 50mg, twice a day.
momaine Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 HD IVIG along with augmentin and zithromax were the first things to help.
Wilma Jenks Posted March 8, 2011 Author Report Posted March 8, 2011 I can't get high doses of ANYTHING into her, without her going completely crazy. All the doctors we work with, try to accomplish this, because they don't thing they can do it... but finally they give in and tell me to cut back on stuff. Her little body can NOT handle meds/supps., especially in high doses. I am only able 2 keep her somewhat stable with tiny bits of things. She has closridia, that may be the cause. Not sure.
mommakath Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 CBT / ERP Therapy....a must for OCD and OCD Symptoms. Have used 2 intensive programs. Dr. Eric Storch used to be at UF Shands in Gainesville, Fl but noe at UF in Tampa at Rothchild Center. His team even does it via Skype - a lifesaver. Sit and home on the computer and get therapy from one of the top specialists on OCD. UF/SHands also has excellent program still - contact is Joe McNamara. Can google both places.
