KaraM Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 My dd8, 62 lbs, was prescribed 150mg of Clindamycin 3x/day (this looks like the maximum recommended dosage based on what I found on line). It says it should be evenly spaced, 8 hours apart. We are really struggling getting all the doses in. Or, if we get them in the second two are only about 4 hours apart. Then, the first the next day is another 10 - 12 hours later. So for example, 7:30 am, 3:30 pm when she gets home from school, then 7:30 pm an hour before bed so we can give Culturelle a little later. The pills are huge, too. She manages, but it's always a little daunting for her. So sometimes, we can't get the first in her until 10am. Then that throws the whole schedule for the day off. Or, like today, she fell asleep in the chair at 6:45, before she took her last dose. (On a different note, I'm hoping this early dozing may mean the medication is finally kicking in and something is relaxing in her tired, tense little body...keep your fingers crossed.) I know the dosing has something to do with half life, etc. Is it ok if our timing is off or if we are only getting 2 doses in. The dosage recommendations are 2 - 5 mg per kg. We see Dr. B on Monday. I am going to ask if we can switch her again (she just started this a week or so ago after almost a year on Zith). In the meantime, just looking for some thoughts from those of you familiar with medication administration, etc. I know there are a few of you out there. Thanks, Kara

Betty04 Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 (edited) We used Clindamycin for my son and at the time it was very helpful. There are 75mg capsules available if you think 2 small pills is better than one large one. We used to dose the probiotics in between the 2nd and 3rd doses. Maybe you can give the culterelle at around 5:30pm and then push the last Clindamycin to right before bedtime? Also you can give S.boulardi near the time of antibiotics and is a good choice to help lower the c-diff risk that comes with Clindamycin. HTH Edited February 15, 2011 by Betty04
eljomom Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 I took Clindamycin briefly a few years ago for Cellulitis/suspected Lyme.....they told me not to worry about the 8 hours...just to make sure to space it evenly during the waking hours. I would highly recommend probiotics with it though, as I developed diarrhea within a very short time on it. At the time, I was told NOT to take probiotics until I had finished the whole course of clind., so i believe it would have helped to start it sooner.
forjpj Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 Pharmacist told us the same thing...one when wake up, one at bed, and fit the others in during the day...mine kids are taking 150mg 4x/day right now. And I am just cramming probiotics in (or yogurt) whenever I can in between...hoping there isn't such a thing as too much. Luckily, the school is giving my daughter one of her doses so that helps. Isn't there a liquid...would that help your daughter? Keeping my fingers crossed it helps our kids!!!
Kayanne Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 (edited) Clindamycin is what finally kicked the strep infection for my daughter. We gave her 300mg 3x/day (total of 900mg daily) for 10 days. We dosed in the morning, after school, and before bed. We didn't worry about probiotics at the time...it was impossible to get her to take Fish oil that the pediatric psych recommended, so I knew probiotics were out too. That was even before I found this forum, so I assumed that probiotics should be taken when the course of antibiotics was done. Edited February 15, 2011 by Kayanne
EAMom Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 Isn't there a liquid...would that help your daughter? Keeping my fingers crossed it helps our kids!!! Oh...the liquid Clindamycin is really NASTY tasting. It was rx'd for our non-PANDAS strep carrier dd. We got 2 doses in (took about an hour for each one, with lots of tears, she was 5 at the time) and then broke down and switched to liquid Azith. (which cleared her carrier state thankfully, in 5 doses total!)
Joan Pandas Mom Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 My son is going to be starting 300 mg clyndimicin 3x day for a month. He weighs 160 lbs. I give him 50 bil. probiotics right now. Should I up that dose? How high?
