Metal Detectors & Risks

I go through metal detectors and baggage screening everyday at work. I was wondering if there are any risks of that and if it can affect tics, etc?

Hi,

I think common sense is the key here. Tourettes is a condition that causes tics. Try not to spend your life being afraid of every little thing. Your energy would be better spent accepting.

There are tried and true medications that can help if you are so inclined. TS was around long before TV screens and peiople like us ticced away. We were loved, accepted and part of the whole.

Love yourself

I'm not afraid of every little thing, I'm just curious because I know the result people have gotten from screens, etc. and just wondered about metal detectors. I've had ts for 14 years and accepted it a long time ago, but I will still always be researching and trying things to eliminate my tics as much as possible. I've tried just about every med out there for ts with no luck. They either don't help me or they have too many side effects that can't be tolerated. I also don't want to be on meds if I can do stuff naturally that will make a difference and am in the process of trying to go med free. For me when I was younger I was not accepted with the severe ts I had.

Hi Carolyn! and well said!! You have lived with TS for long enough to have come well to terms with coping, and you actually have one of the most postive attitudes! and I sure know you arent alarmist nor "afraid of every little thing" We have all learned a lot from your sensible approach to living with TS.

Electro magnetic fields can and do influence our bodies and so I think you are being very intelligent in seeking knowledge as to daily passage thru a metal detector. I am not sure just how they work but would think that there is some form of electromgnetic etc field involved

I dont have any informed answers for you, but I do know that our doctor feels that the increased tics that so many people seem to experience in motor vehicles may in some way be related to electromagnetism.

My son also found that changing oput his coil spring bed for a wooden slat base and furton helped him sleep better

sooooooooo

interesting question you have asked and I hope someone with knowledge in this area will have some answers

Carolyn,

I don't think you were posting on Braintalk when TSNW was an active member. Well, the poster here named "Lanie" could be her twin. TSNW has her own website and never missed a chance to post to it, and I see that 'Lanie' just did that right now.

TSNW/Lanie, is/are extremely against any alternative methods for tics or TS. TSNW was constantly arguing with people such as myself (TV/computer as trigger), FJ (pyroluria), Ronnas (PANDAS) and others who tried supplements and criticizing us for doing alternative approaches because of either the psychological or emotional damage we absolutely must be doing to our children. Her view is that drugs are the only safe way to deal with tics, which will likely seem ironic to many posters here, even though some of the parents do choose to use them.

TSNW almost destroyed the Braintalk TS forum with her criticisms and taking things we said out of context and destroying them, and making parents feel guilty for wanting to help their children feel better. The board turned into a battlefield for a time. I left and might have quit posting altogether had it not been for Latitudes and Chemar being so welcoming to me.

I have no issue with TSNW/Lanie's right to believe what she/they believe, I respect that 100%. However, I take strong issue with their/her implicit and explicit and most importantly, her disrespectful criticisms of the parents and individuals engaging in alternative treatments.

"Lanie's" first couple of posts entering this board basically cleverly found a way to insult those of us trying these methods, and my stance is the same regardless of who she is: She is already of a certain mind, we can't change that. My best advice is not to let her try to do to Latitudes what TSNW did to Braintalk.

People here know me very well by now. It may be hard for you to understand this post if you weren't on Braintalk during that time period, as Lanie's first couple of posts here only hint at how disruptive this can get over time. But I feel like Kim's neurologist just joined the board--not just with a differing view, but disdainful of anyone who disagrees, and just want you (Carolyn) and others to know that you don't have to put in the energy here trying to defend your approaches and questions. As a group as a whole we 'accept' our questions and the gift of emotional and physical health we are trying to give our children. Don't feel that her questioning you means that anyone else here does. Having said this, as Chemar said, you did a great job of explaining your views. I think I have told you that I am especially excited to hear of your progress, both for you and for the hope it will give to adults who feel that there is no longer a window to heal themselves.

We see tics as a sign of possible health issues, and our focus is on healing. What a blessing for some of us: Alison with her happier, more focused child, Chemar with her emotionally strong son, Marie with her happier household, Dara, with her happier household, Marina with her son's continuing success, etc... and the parents here, who carry far less weight on their shoulders from worry as we watch our children heal.

What remarkable results we have seen and will continue to see, and our gift in return will someday be to plant the seed for those mainstream studies that will allow more children to benefit. Thank goodness for alternative doctors and for this board and its dedicated families. And for Sheila for putting this together and trying to get her book out.

Claire

ps Back to not posting, I admit, that "Lanie's" arrival brought me out--for concern for the board. I can only hope that my concerns are unnecessary and that the implied criticisms don't escalate.

Thank you Claire for your response here. In my early research into PANDAS I did come across some very disrespectful exchanges on the old Braintalk site. I have at times refrained from responding to some posts there as I was not sure what healthy could come out of it. I have enough stress in my life. I always find it interesting to read people's thoughts that those who limit tv are punishing their kids unnecessarily - and that the reason the kids are ticcing is because they are relaxing, and that by taking away tv we are taking away their time to relax. Interesting how my son ticced when watching a regular tv yet an LCD did not cause ticcing - I would expect that he was equally relaxed while watching both tvs. He continues to be tic free when watching LCD tv and is now watching all of his regular favorite shows, all the japanimation. I realize that removing tv or replacing with LCD is not the answer to all but it sure seems worth trying for a week. Restricting food was the best thing I could have ever done for my son. He does not see it as punishment as I do my best to provide alternatives - ie no ice cream but sherbet it ok. I make his own pizza and take it for pizza days at school. I expect by the fall we will start to reintroduce some things for special occasions like birthday parties. I have taken his lead on the vitamins and have started to reduce the amount he is taking - had he complained about it early on I would not have forced it upon him.

Just wanted to thank you again Claire for summing up so much as always in such a clear and articulate way.

Hi Carolyn:

Welcome and be welcomed to this forum of caring and loving people. My hat is off to you for livng and understanding TS for 14 years and you sound like you have embraced your challenges. Your question about metal detectors is one of merit. My dad who has a pacemaker cannot go through one. People are cautioned not to live by high tension wires. Dr. Weil, the guy with the long white beard says appliances like blow dryers cause harm to the human body. We are made of energy and water...these modern day advances are not without a price. And to question if it increases tics is not out of the loop of questioning if video games cause tics or just seizures. I for one do not have any hard evidence that it can trigger tics, but again I don't have any hard evidence that it does not. I am not as knowledgable as many here are..but my common sense answers are from the heart. We all find our triggers with trial and error, so I guess if you notice any increase of tics by a metal detector or after exposure to one you will find your answer that is tailor made to you. Many did just that with the screen exposure. As for the previous reply that has upset all who read it, I will tell you what would tell my own children:

Knowing fear is to never have ask the question. Knowing courage is to embrace your challenges, and live a happy life.

I hope you learn as much as I learned on this forum and with the knowledge may you have success with it. A healthier lifesytle is a life style change that will not improve your life in one instant. It is a gradual process with many baby steps and then one day you will realize that you feel better, look better or with Gods Blessing even tic less. May your mind heal, your body rebuild and your spirit soar to higher heights!

Oh and Claire....You go girl!!!

Marie
