Guest mt Posted April 3, 2005 Report Posted April 3, 2005 has anyone used omega 3 for their tics and seen an improvement?
Chemar Posted April 3, 2005 Report Posted April 3, 2005 Hi yes, omega 3 essential fatty acids seem to be very beneficial, although some people have a sensitivity to fish oil and so need to get their omega 3 by eating salmon, mackrel, sardines etc Many find the best results from a blend of omega3 and 6 and 9 The richest sources of omega 6 are flaxseed, borage and evening primrose oil while oleic acid is a good source of omega 9 Once again, as with all supplements, different people have different metabolism etc and so what works for one doesnt always work for another. but overall the response to the omega essential fatty acids is a very positive one hth
Andy Posted April 4, 2005 Report Posted April 4, 2005 We live by the stuff in our house. We give it to our older two kids for their brain development, the third is still to young, and my wife and I use it so we will not lose our brains. Does it help with the tics, I think it is just a small step to finding the solution but a good step. Just make sure that if you buy a brand that you buy one that is mercury free. We use Nordic Naturals but I am sure if you make a posting others will give you other alternatives to choose from.
ad_ccl Posted April 4, 2005 Report Posted April 4, 2005 Andy, Just curious as you mention your third is too young for the fish oils, what age is safe to start? We are now all using fish oils as well - my husband, me, oldest child with PANDAS, and middle child with terrible eating habits - baby is 14 months and I have not thought of when he would start. The naturopath we go to says she recommends fish oils for every patient, children, middle age, elderly - everyone can benefit. Your comment about not losing your brain gave me a chuckle.
Andy Posted April 4, 2005 Report Posted April 4, 2005 Glad I made you smile. My youngest is 5 months going on 6 and my wife is his happy meal for the most part. Our neurologist told us that it was ok to give it to my second son when he was three. I don't know when is the right age, but I really don't see how it could be a bad thing as long as the child wants to take it. I think in the old days cod liver oil was given to young kids on a regular basis. My second son who is a trip but other then that has not shown anything else loves the stuff. We use the Nordic liquid with the fruit flavor. I am a great believer in the stuff for brain health overall for after all it is not like it is safe to eat fish anymore,.Rivers and lakes are polluted as well as the oceans, so where else are we going to get our brain food from?
met Posted April 4, 2005 Report Posted April 4, 2005 thank you all for your input. My son who is 8 1/2 yrs started showing some signs. Its very hard to accept. The fears of it getting worse, thinking about his future, etc. drives you insane. You feel so hopeless. thanks again.
Guest Guest_MMAZZ Posted April 4, 2005 Report Posted April 4, 2005 Welcome MET; We all share the same concerns. This forum is great for all the information and support you will need to help you through some tough times...it is for me anyway. I'm very new to this also, but what I have learned is slow and steady wins the race. There are no over night cures and trial and error proves to be the way to go. I know I tried everything full blast and became overwhelmed and disillusioned when tics increased and I did not know why, so I had to start from the begininng. The hardest part for me was keep myself healthy, sane and the family happy. Only with clarity and unity did the detective work become less stressful. Good luck throughout your journey and welcome! Marie
