My ds13 is currently on lyme protocol treatment and has been doing pretty well with no new symptoms (or relief). Currently on Albenza (5 days left of 2 weeks) and other supplements. But at night he sometimes moves in his sleep almost constantly until early morning. Anyone had this happen?

Any variety of sleep problems in itself, even without treatment, is a common symptom of lyme disease. But, I have had additional sleep issues pop up during the initial stages of taking drugs. It just happened again when ketek (intracellular abx) was added about a few days ago. For me, the dreams have been particularly disturbing, nobody's watching me, so I don't know about movement in sleep, but to me they both sound like generally disturbed sleep.

Thank you for your input. We are wondering if it is after some exercise of which he is doing just a little. Best wishes on your treatment!

All types of sleep dysfunction can occur with lyme. Are you using magnesium supplement? This was very helpful for my daughter's restless sleep / restless leg problems. Also good for so many other things, and folks with lyme are often deficient. Kids Calm mag is a good choice for children.

On a hair test my ds showed low levels of all vitamins even though he had been taking lots of them for months. He does have some magnesium in one of his supplements, but not much. How much do you use? He is over 100 lbs. I saw some "magnesium sulfite" that looked like epsom salt but larger flakes. I wonder if that would absorb and work well... Thank you!

Our Dr. recommended 2,000 m.g. per day for me and I'm not much bigger than your son. I give my kids, CALM (adult version) up to 600 m.g. per day and they are much smaller.

This is the one supplement I don't keep up with regularly (only so much you can do in a day)... But when I do take it regularly I sleep much better and its also suppose to help with the leg cramps and joint pain.

Thank you so much Wendy. Best wishes on your recovery!

Our dosing has been lower than that.

But the important thing with mag is to start with lower dose and gradually increase. Too much = loose stools. The Calm products are good because they give mag in appropriate combo with calcium -- and don't contain the artificials.

Concur: We were instructed to back off if there was loose stool as a result of dosage. We also do at least a 1/2 cup bentonite clay per day per child which can be very firming for the stool and perhaps why we haven't had a problem with the higher dose.

It's funny how someone else will usually ask the question that I am wondering about. DS, 11, has been waking and dreaming more since he started treatment. We are taking Perque Magnesium Plus Guard, but had run out of it. The recommended dose for my son, 140 lbs. is two capsules, three times a day which is about 660 mg. Can't wait for the UPS man to deliver that stuff. Works wonderfully!!!

Good point about counteracting the effects of the clay.

Wendy, what brand of clay do you use? Also, could you remind me again if you use this every single day, or do you alternate the clay with other binders?

thanks,

Mary

Mary,

We use Great Plains Bentonite Clay: http://www.iherb.com/Yerba-Prima-Great-Plains-Bentonite-Detox-16-fl-oz-473-ml/4789?at=0

We do take it daily. Our older son drinks it straight right before bed, 1/2 cup. We have our twins drink it first thing in the morning and then first antibiotic 2 1/2 hours later. We combined the following into a drink for them.

  • 1/3 cup bentonite clay
  • 1/3 cup favored kefir
  • 1/3 cup raspberry/apple juice
  • 4 adult scoops Custom Probiotics 11 strain formula = approximately 850 billion unit probiotics (we worked our way up to this amount)

We do not use other binders. Our nutritionist now sells it in pill form http://www.uniquehealing.com/unique-healing-store/unique-healing-body-bentonite-capsules

Thanks (for some reason I thought you all also took charcoal).

Do you know why it's OK to take your probiotics with the clay? My impression of binders -- whaterver kind -- was that they needed to be taken away from everything (supps, meds, etc). Is that not true of clay and probiotics? Sure would make things easier if that's the case.

I've talked with our nutritionist about it several times..... It's the standard recommendation of 2 hours away from everything but she doesn't think you need to worry about it with the probiotics because we take so much. Our older son takes 1.5 trillion units per day. We tested our DD's good bacteria via stool samples and she has a decent amount good bacteria (20 to 30% for almost all strains tested) so something is working. We also do the kefir daily which has the good strep bacteria for the gut and she looks great there too. They don't take pills and I don't think they would drink the bentonite/probiotics without the kefir and juice.

Sorry I did get the m.g. on the Calm wrong..... its about half for the kids 600 m.g. and unfortunately I don't get it in regularly. I used to give them a sippy cup at night next to their beds with the Calm in it. They would drink it during the night but I've gotten lazy. Now, I give it when one has joint pain or complains of just not feeling well. I was taking the liquid Calicium, Magnesium Citrate lemon favored which has 600 m.g. Mag., 1200 m.g. Calcium, 800 IU Vitamin D3... Its easy 'no pills' but again I've gotten lazy and have resorted to Calm at night for myself when needed (but its not enough m.g. per our LLMD).

Elizabeth rotates between charcoal and clay. Her son won't drink the clay but I think she is buying the pills now.

Hope that helps. Wendy

Thanks, that was helpful. I'm trying to come up with a protocol for my little one, who is new to all this. I think we will still give binder (either clay or charcoal) away from everything, as she does not take as high a dose of probiotics.

Well, you know I'm the big magnesium booster. Maybe it was my older daughter's particular symptom set, but mag was one of the best things we did for her to get her 'round the bend. Whenever we slacked off, it showed. But so hard to do "everything"! Something's gotta give at one time or another.
