Is this dose a bit high for 45 pound child?

Just got a call from Dr. Latimer's office that the receptionist called in the RX for my daughter. She weighs 45 pounds, and Augmentin 500 mg/5 ml was called in @ 2 Teaspoons 2 X a day. Doesn't that seem high???

That does seem high maybe was a mistake, you should call and verify with doctors office. My daughter is 40 pounds she would only take a tsp 2x a day.

1 tsp. = 5ml

 

so she's getting 1000mg (10ml) Augmentin 2x daily

I wonder how much Clav. Acid is in this? B/c I believe that is what you would be concerned about.

Are you sure it's 500mg/5ml? I googled Augmentin and see various concentrations listed, but not 500mg/5ml.

* Augmentin 125 mg per 5 mL (available in 75-, 100-, and 150-mL bottles) -- banana flavor

* Augmentin 200 mg per 5 mL (available in 50-, 75-, and 100-mL bottles ) -- orange flavor

* Augmentin 250 mg per 5 mL available in 75-, 100-, and 150-mL bottles) -- orange flavor

* Augmentin 400 mg per 5 mL (available in 50-, 75-, and 100-mL bottles) -- orange flavor.

Yup--500 mg/5 ml. When she had impetigo this summer, ped. Put her on that dose @ 1 tsp 2 x per day...

Due to the concern with Clav acid/lb -my daughter (50lbs) was on Augmentin ES, 600mg, which has less clav acid-2x/day thus 1200mg/day & eventually to 1x/day prophylaxis. Recently we switched to chewables (which we cut & she swallows) and to adjust for clav acid amt, she takes 400mg augmentin & 250 ammox. I would question the amount of clav acid as well based on her weight.
