Just curious about morning nausea & a one time vomiting thing going on w/ my ds. 6 weeks into lyme treatment on zith/doxy/mepron. This nausea thing is new. Last two days he has just plain been down in the morning & then perked up. I could do w/o the vomiting. Ideas/thoughts Dawn

I'm sorry to hear your ds is having this problem. :(

A couple things come to mind. Doxy is notorious for causing upset stomach and does make some people vomit. Does your son take it with food? We take ours with a ginger root capsule in the middle of a meal to help keep the nausea back. Some people get nauseous right away from Doxy and with others, it may take awhile. I didn't start to have stomach upset until I was about a month in.

Does he take the Doxy right before bed?

Doe your son take probiotics and a Florastor type of beneficial yeast?

Most prescription bottles say to take Doxy on an empty stomach, but I have never met anyone that could!

My son also vomited day 38 and 39 of Lyme treatment. Talked to the Dr. and said it could have been herxing or a virus. In our situation, it resolved fairly quickly so we assumed herxing. I understand Alka Seltzer can really help.... I took it last weekend when I had flu like symptoms and it was a tremendous help. If it continues I would then assume Doxy...

One of my kids just threw up, and now says he feels fine. The other one is having constant upset stomach (worse since starting the doxy), but is also herxing out the wazoo (and he is the one who was least positive in the family for Lyme...only 1 IgG band...#41, but he's herxing the most.)

BTW, our LLMD specifically said to take doxy with food (which they both do, but still are having stomach problems.) He said that the warning to take doxy without food is only for tetracycline, which is in the same family, but does not apply to doxy, even though the prescription bottles say to take it without food!)

My DH tried to take it without food the first 2 or 3 days, but couldn't then started taking with it crackers, only to find out later that he's supposed to take it with food, anyway.

Personally, I suspect the stomach problems are due to the doxy, but we're doing everything we can to minimize it (food + 4 probiotic pearls per day + 4 sacchromyces (florastor without the lactose) per day.

Thank goodness we all have each other to get through this herxing.

Oh Dawn and tpotter...I am SO SORRY to hear this. I sure hope we are not headed down the same path in a few weeks. Please keep posting and let us know how they are doing and what you are doing if you change course. I'm learning from everyone here.

Too weird. Days 38 & 39 here, too!

We do take it with food. And not before bed. His appetite is not what it use to be. That is one complaint he has. yes, to the probiotics-both types. Dawn

Dawn,

Make sure you note the days and symptoms for the Dr. The growth cycle for Lyme is every 3 to 4 weeks. Babesia is every 2 to 3 weeks. AND, I believe Bartonella is even shorter than 2 to 3 weeks. We are getting a flair in symptoms almost every two weeks. My husband forgot to give him one of his antibiotics for over two weeks. We restarted and on the 10th day he was physically ill again and home from school yesterday. Same cycle we had when starting Lyme treatment. He is one of my children that doesn't make antibodies and they suspect Bartonella/Babesia for him as well. By knowing the cycle.... you essentially know what to expect and can determine when you've really dealt with the co-infection.

I find it funny now to think about Dr. K's words... The sicker they are post hdIVIG the better they do long term!

The Doxy does give me acid reflux and I am taking a Pepcid AC with the meal. I am hoping to get them to change the antibiotic next week for me.

Three things I've recently read that helps with herxing: Motrin (when needed)/Alka Selzer (when needed)/Benadryl at night.

Hopefully, your son is feeling better. Our son is already doing better today... if it is herxing the flairs get shorter and easier to manage.

Are you taking the tiny doxys or the big pill? The little one was easier on the stomach for me. Doxy is one drug they kept me on the whole time but I got good at taking it in the middle of an egg sandwich for breakfast. Eat a couple bites, then take the doxy, then eat a couple more. Any other way and I would feel sick. The one I took wasn't much bigger than a sudafed pill (you know the little red ones they used to sell?)

Doxy 100mg bid. OK, now he tells me tonight as I am tucking him in: "Why do I have to have a headache everyday?" Ugh...Not sure how long this has really been going on, but I know that can go with lyme. I gave him motrin this a.m.--he said it didn't really help. I can see how the symptoms are cycling in & out now. Having the 3 B's makes for non-stop symptoms. That has been what has made him a tough cookie all the way along from the time he was knee-high to a grasshopper! dawn

I was reading in 'Insight to Lyme Treatment' that the Dr. looks for one or two days of 'feeling good' in the first six weeks of treatment to indicate its working. He is a trooper!!!!!!! Keep manage those symptoms as best you can.

I swear I am trying everything with the Doxy and it just doesn't sit well with me. I am taking the big blue bills. I'm hoping for a change in antibiotic come next Wednesday. I'll have my babesia results then.

Some people switch to Mino and report less side effects.

I've been on Doxy (the big blue ones) for a looooong time now. I still have days that are nauseous. I also find that having some form of carb (I eat gluten free pretzels) and a cup of decaf tea about an hour after I take it really helps settle my stomach.

Doxy can also cause pressure headaches. It feels like a rubber band is around the top of your head. They will get better as time goes on. Tumeric or Curcumin can help with the headaches.

When my son has an upset stomach (he is also on Doxy), with him I find it happens when he is herxing or having a flare and charcoal and lemon water help to settle things down.
