Increased symptoms with mycoplasma exposure?

Recommended Posts

I often read that our kids have an increase in symptoms when around folks (family members, classmates, etc) with strep. I am wondering if anyone has seen a similar situation with mycoplasma.

I had mycoplasma last week. I am feeling better after 5 days of zith, but not 100% yet. My son has been on 500mg zith for months, so I was hoping he'd be protected. We are seeing some unusual things like increase in OCD symptoms, deterioration in handwriting, sweaty, clammy skin, and overall not feeling well. He is also complaining of stuffy nose and sore throat (post nasal drip type).

I am thinking he may have contracted a virus, but I am also wondering if he could just be responding to being around mycop. like so many kids respond to being around strep.

Any ideas are welcome... Thanks!

Our DS was recently re-exposed to strep (his Achilles heel), and even though remains on a substantial dose of Augmentin XR we, too, saw some of his behaviors go on the increase; a blood test reflected increased titers again, as well. Our ped says that exposure can still cause the body to mount an antibody defense, even though, thanks to the abx, there's limited chance that he will catch an "active infection." I would think the same phenomenon would apply to myco p, as well, which would explain your DS's increased behaviors. Bummer. :(

Thanks - did you change or add any ABX - or did you just wait it out?

We were able to "ride it out." The increase, while noticable to us, especially at home, didn't extend beyond his available accommodations at school, and he was able to employ his ERP tools to help him through. It wasn't fun, but he "came back up to the surface" within about 2 weeks.

We have seen several flare ups with both pandas daughters due to immune challenges. Having the flu, losing baby teeth, exposure only to strep, and one time exposure to respiratory illness. The exposure flare ups are the mildest, and have a more predictable pattern- usually subside a few days after exposure is over.

Typically, I up our antibiotics a bit, and dose every 8 hours with advil - I do this for about 4 days. This has really helped.

We did have one occassion where younger dd was having constant exposure to strep in school, week after week, eventually we couldn't get her back to her 90-ish% baseline, so we did a steroid burst. This did help. Time is also a factor here.

Good luck, hang in there- it is always "white knuckle" time for me :(
