mama2alex Posted October 25, 2010 Report Posted October 25, 2010 I just put together a spreadsheet of my son's supplements/medications (yes, its come to that!) and discovered that we are spending around $80 a month on his probiotics alone. There has to be a cheaper way. We are currently giving him 2 Florastor and 2 Lacto-TriBlend per day. He's 70 lbs and on 2 types of antibiotics (Rifampin and Alinia) at the moment. Any recommendations for excellent (preferably doctor recommended) probiotics that don't cost so much?
PacificMama Posted October 26, 2010 Report Posted October 26, 2010 Yikes, that's a lot just for probiotics (especially when there are so many other supps to add in). However, my caveat is definitely do not go cheap on the probiotics. We did this for a while when my daughter fist started abx. However, we eventually switched to Theralac (NOT Threelac) -- Theralac is recommended quite a bit on the lyme boards. It made a HUGE difference in her turning the corner. We buy half case at a time -- 6 bottles -- for $210. There are 30 capsule per bottle (1 month for daily use). http://theralac.com/Default.aspx They have a new children's version -- which is essentially just the powder if your child is not old enough to swallow capsule. Perhaps you will get other recommendations too. Mary

PacificMama Posted October 26, 2010 Report Posted October 26, 2010 I give her 1 capsule per day. They have at least 30 billion CFU. This worked wonders for her. The company is really familiar with lyme, and I have corresponded with them over time. I think Wendy gives higher CFU -- she could tell you more. But something about Theralac's formula really works for the lyme folks. Also, the second most important supp I ever gave my daughter was Kid's Calm magnesium powder. It was like a miracle supp, and helped so much with the leg pains/restless leg, nighttime anxiety, etc. Supplementing with magnesium is HUGE with lyme. sf_mom Posted October 26, 2010 Report Posted October 26, 2010 We use Custom Probiotics. It would be cheaper depending on how much you are giving your son. As you know, we are well beyond the norm with our kids taking approximately 1.5 trillion units per day. Dr. H advocates Custom Probiotic (as well as others) and was perfectly fine with the amount we are giving all our kids. http://www.customprobiotics.com/custom-probiotics-adult-formula-cp-1.htm
sf_mom Posted October 26, 2010 Report Posted October 26, 2010 (edited) 'Ditto' the Kids Calm. Our Dr. recommends me taking 1,500 m.g. to 2,000 m.g. of Magnesium. I take the liquid Calcium Magnesium Citrate which includes D, Calcium, Magnesium. Edited October 26, 2010 by SF Mom
justinekno Posted October 26, 2010 Report Posted October 26, 2010 We just started using this probiotic and I agree, it has helped my son immensely. We buy from the LLMD but this is go to know about buying by the case. I think we paid $40 for 30 pills. We give one capsule a day too. We also use a natural fiber product to help with the colon. Yikes, that's a lot just for probiotics (especially when there are so many other supps to add in). However, my caveat is definitely do not go cheap on the probiotics. NancyD Posted October 26, 2010 Report Posted October 26, 2010 It costs us about $70/month in probiotics. It's a killer when there are so many other supplements to but. For some reason my DD has had real difficulty taking probiotics over the years -- they all seem to activate her, making her hyper and making her moods so much worse. The only one we have had luck with is Natren's Bifido Factor. I'm just not sure it's enough, especially now that she has Lyme. I might be game to try Theralac.

I'm thinking we may try this brand and then check in with Dr. H on the dosage at our appt next week. Depending on how many capsules a day I have to give him, this would probably cut our costs without sacrificing the quality. I can't compare with what he's currently taking because Florastor lists mgs, not CFU's on the bottle - very confusing.
sf_mom Posted October 26, 2010 Report Posted October 26, 2010 Mom2Alex... We are giving him 20 probiotic pills a day. We just got back from seeing Dr. H and since we are seeing results show up in the stool samples etc. we are continuing dosage. Although, I think he normally recommends something much, much, in terms of dosage. 2 pills per day... 100 Billion. -Wendy
