Anxiety

I have not posted on this site in awhile but I check in everyday and read all the posts!! My son is now 10 and has TS, ADD, Anxiety and OCD>

He has been on Lexapro for the OCD and Anxiety. I was able to take him off the Lexapro about 5 months ago with no problems.

Well last month the Anxiety/OCD (thoughts-fears) came back!!

I do not want to put him back on the Lexapro but I dont know what to do to help him.

He takes Bonnie G's vitamins, extra Mag/Taurate, Omega 3 supplement and L-Carnitine.

Has anyone tried Theanine or GABA. I have read a ton on Inositol but have been told and read on various sites that it is not good to use with an ADD child. It tend to make matters worse.

Any suggestions would be great. Robin

P.S. I also have started him on Threelac for Yeast. He is positive according to the spit test. I know that yeast can cause anxiety etc. Robin

Hi Robin

my son has TS & ADD and he did just fine with Inositol.

we also used 5HTP to help with his OCD /anxiety etc. as well as methionine (or the samE version which costs more but acts faster)

GABA is ok but not advised for everyone

with all these I really do advise having a naturopath or integrative physician give advice on suitablitily and doseage

our plan was formulated with physician guidance and was very specific to my son's individual needs and metabolism.

as with all supps....what works for some doesnt always work for others because of underlying individual biochemistry

If you have seen such a sudden return of OCD/anxiety there may well be an infection or other illness or parasite, toxin, allergy causing it

we have almost always been able to trace such flareups to something like that!

Is this the same Robin that used to post here a lot (under the name Robin), but disappeared? The one with the husband familiar with molds?

If so, good to see you again!

If not, then welcome!

In any case, I will be interested to hear about the Threelac, and I know Heather will also.

Claire, Yes I am the same Robin, I had to change my log in name.

I will keep you posted on how the Threelac work.

Chemar, My son asked me this weekend to please get him back on the Lexapro. He has such a stressful weekend. He just cannot keep the anxious thoughts from going through his head and that leads to panic attacks.

I have tried a homepathic form of St. Johns Wort for 4-1/2 weeks with no results.

I do have a product called Be-Calm that works within 5 minutes to carm him down but it wears off after 2-3 hours and its not something I need to give him all day long. I Cant send it to school and he really needs something throughout the day to carm him down.

Does the 5 HTP get in your system faster then the St. Johns Wort?

My Alternative Dr. is not wanting to advice us on treatemenst for Anxiety. He just does not feel comfortable with this. I have researched our area for other Physicians such as DAN Dr's etc. and I will need to drive 2-3 hours for an appointment. I am willing to do this for my son but that will make him even more anxious!!

Have you heard of Billie J. Sahley, Ph.D. She is mentioned in Doris Rapps book "Is This Your Child" She has a protocol for TS and Anxiety which calls for 30 MG of 5HTP for OCD, anxiety, sleep problems etc. She also recommends 1500 mg of Taurine instead of Mag Taurate. I have read where you use the Taurine. Do you think this may have a more carming effect.

We have been doing so good with his tics etc. He has a few tics everyday and is fine with this. Its the anxiety that is so hard to deal with. Robin

Hi Robin

the 5HTP had by far the most dramatic and immediate effect on my son in calming his anxiety and stabilising the OCD. He took 50mg each evening. I havent ever seen it in 30mg doses but that would be good to start with if possible

some people get "edgy" on it so if you dont see a marked improvement but instead a worsening after 3 days, discontinue it

1500mg taurine seems high to me, as we used only 500mg taurine (along with a separate combo of 500mg magnesium, 1000mg calcium, 50mg zinc)

Hello Robin!

Well, Pfeiffer tests and treats for anxiety, OCD, and ADD (they don't claim to treat tics, but yes on anxieties...) They do a methylation/histamine test at www.labcorp.com (check out the thread with NTBown) and based on this can assess whether inositol, or 5HTP or whatever is best for your son. Plus they try to bring the histamine levels back in balance.

They have an outreach clinic that goes around the country. You child is there for 2 hours then the rest is done by phone.

Also, our DAN doctor had our son at the first visit, then he didn't have to go again. I really recommend this--they treat a broad range of symptoms just like Pfeiffer (you would need to call and do a phone interview first to make sure you don't waste a trip).

My point is that with the combination of things he has, I think professional guidance is key.

Did your naturopath do the pyroluria test at www.pyroluriatesting.com? Kids with pyroluria don't deal with stress well, it is a common underlying issue. Plus 30% of kids with ADD have it. Reasonable odds there.

I have forgotten whether you tried a casein/gluten free diet or tested for other food allergies?

Pfeiffer has a great site loaded with info. You can do a google search for anxiety there.

http://www.alternativementalhealth.com/art...icles/walsh.htm

The other thing is he may have adrenal stress, and there is a test at www.diagnostechs.com (I hope I spelled that right).

Have you checked mercury levels? I seem to remember that you suspected your son had photosensitivity (when his tics were gone after a week at a farm or something) but no screens wasn't an option based on his temperament (I am personally convinced that the compulsiveness with OCD makes this even more difficult). Anyway, screens aside--since I know this wasn't his thing to try, the photosensitivity could imply vitamin deficiencies, yeast, mercury or pyroluria.... You haven't posted in some time, so I don't know what your naturopath treated for.

I won't say more--if you are reading the posts, you must have all this info of course!

Sorry about the anxiety! He (and you) sure have a lot to deal with. :(

EFGH, My sons has classic anxiety. He get tightness in his chest, shortness of breath, hot/cold etc. He has had the anxiety for 3 years. It started just a few months after the tics started.

Claire. I am retesting for Pyrolia. I have ordered a kit from Direct HealthCare Access. I test 1 year ago and his level was at 12. I emailed FJ on the Braintalk board and she felt like a 12 was not something I should worry about treating.

When I saw the different levels your son had from different labs I decided to retest.

I need to find another Dr. I am just not having much luck in this area.

I have checked out the Pfeiffer site and it does not look like they come close to NC.

I am sure I can find a DAN Dr. in Raleigh, NC I am just 2.5 hours from there.

I hope your son is better soon. I will keep him in my prayers. My 2 year old gets very high fevers that last 3-4 days. He has a very low immune system. A few friends of ours have had the flu with a fever lasting 5+ days. I am sure this will pass soon. Robin

Keep us posted. Robin
